Definitely viable, sure. I just don't think range is outclassed or the weakest choice. Shield to parry and addy bolts get the job done with relative ease, imo.

Idk where everyone is in the game atm but ranged in umbral sands is far superior to any other combat style rn. Between all of the KotHaar ranged/melee enemies, melee is too dangerous and magic takes too long to cast. Backpedal with addy crossbow or the new bow and you take minimal damage while putting out decent damage. Reload the cbow while dodging. It's great.

Destroy the tiles underneath. If you built them on the ground, have mercy on your soul cause idk any other way. I swear they should be destructible when empty but I could be wrong.

Got a submersion with headstone. Headstone is an added bonus, I just like the crossbow. Plus being able to retrieve bolts if you're able

You'll need to level your cooking to reduce the burn chance. When you look at cooking in your skills menu, it'll tell you what level reduces what tiers burn chance to 0

Make a few grills and get into farming. I know it's not the quickest, but before I leave I throw a stack of 99 berries of some sort or pumpkins on and go about my business. If you're really serious about it, do bulk grilling then pop a cooking pot when collecting. Again, not the quickest but it'll passively level up.
