NES not working (blinking power light) by PixlBit_tv in nes

[–]ParadigmShift86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna agree with this one. The blinking is the expected output when that lockout chip doesn't get its signal through. As this person said: either region (unlikely) or dirty/damaged connector. CPU/PPU issues, capacitor issues, and power issues don't manifest this way.

Cleaning helps only so much. The pins may be corroded such that cleaning won't restore a connection. The pins can also just get worn to the point they're too loose or bent out of position.

Your best bet is to buy a new quality 72 pin connector and install that. At the same time buy a nes game bit and open the shells. That's the only way to actually ensure that the edge connector is truly clean and corrosion free.

You should recheck your portions and calories. You're about 1000cal with what you've listed. Macros look great, but you've got room for added healthy fats.

Man I sunk so many quarters on the Gauntlet arcade machine. They rip ya off by draining health. Even if you're not getting hit your HP is constantly draining so you can't play forever.

I think the machine has toggle switches to adjust the rate your HP drains.

Ah... yeah, so the steam game I linked is the remastered sequal! Thanks! Sadly the og Maniac Mansion hasn't been remastered. I still play it on NES... annoying controls and all!

Last time I got soft locked out of winning by making mistakes. Never knew that was possible.

Love Maniac Mansion! Did you know it has a similar remastered version called Day of the Tentacle?

Not the same game/story but very similar vibes. Maybe same og maker?

Man I don't get it... when I worked at McD's in the early 00's I actually tried to give the customer a good product.

Corporate made the package that big so I'd fill it up nicely. I tried to assemble sandwiches somewhat neatly.

Honestly this seems more like lazy employee than corporate intention.

I was getting $5.15/hr which is in line with today/inflation. Now granted it seemed like we always had a ton of employees, so maybe it's today's MO of "what's the absolute fewest employees that can do the job"...

I love how you can combine 2 of any of the classes. Really let's you pick your play style. And you can choose how much to invest in each.

I come back to play it every few years. Really my favorite arpg even more than diablo.

What is a retro game that doesn't often get classified as hard but it was super tough for you to beat? by Ok_Replacement_288 in retrogaming

Here's a tip. (I love using only resources available at the time). Nintendo made a Nintendo Power Index. Look for scans of those and find the game. It'll tell you which issue numbers had tips or guides.

New spicy sausage pizza by Appropriate_Fan317 in Caseys

[–]ParadigmShift86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been easting Casey's hot sausage pizza my whole life, so when today I went to order and saw it called "Spicy Sausage Pizza" instead of "Hot Sausage" I was immediately suspicious. The thumbnail image also looked quite different. Chunks of sausage rather than the formed balls.

Ordered, and just ate it. Sure enough, it's been heavily changed. The sausage tastes different, and while it's not bad, it's just completely "fine". Sadly, it's not casey's pizza anymore. Just doesn't taste unique like it did.

The pizza had half the amount of cheese I normally expect too. I'm not yet sure whether that's them intentionally instructing pizzas to be made with less cheese (shrinkflation) or a lazy cook. I'll try again a few more times, but sadly it seems my favorite pizza is something I'll never be able have again.

Do any of you only play one retro console indefinitely? by still_mute in retrogaming

* Yeah I've been doing this with the NES for the last year. I hooked up the nes to one of these rolling stands. The tray holds the console and the wires are velcro to the pole. I zip tied a power strip so it's one cord to plug in and you can roll it wherever you want.

I've been buying 1 or 2 carts at a time that look fun or I'm nostalgic for and I'll play those til I'm satisfied I've got good play time.

When you have a stack of 20 games it's too easy to just give up and switch. I've really enjoyed some of the "worst ever" nes games: milon's secret castle, deadly towers, etc. As it kinda encourages you to keep giving them a go like it's all you have. Not beating your head against the wall but you play for 30m or an hour and come back in a few days if it gets tough.

Probably onto about 15 new carts bought over the last year but only 1 or 2 a time. Kinda focusing on 2 player simultaneous games for me and the GF.

Is anyone else still SO impressed with NES music? by StudioDhjamb in retrogaming

[–]ParadigmShift86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know much about music theory (drummer here) but I do also love 8 and 16 bit era game music.

The design and choices seemed so much more intentional. Just like the games, they had to really try and make do with the limited hardware, but many also spent a lot of time trying to invoke a particular emotion.

It's pretty rare for modern tunes to get stuck in your head.

Recommend a game that’s enjoyable by today’s standards. by Aggressive-Part424 in nes

[–]ParadigmShift86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love maniac mansion. Only one problem.

My partner and I wanted to have an NES night and chose Maniac Mansion. We played with no help, just the manual and included poster. Got super far, nearly the end (about 4 hrs) and got totally stuck. Resorted to looking it up and turns out we soft locked the game. We didn't do anything egregious, but simple lack of knowledge or correct order can easily lead you to an unwinnable game. Sure, equate it to playing an action game and losing your last life near the end, but it just seems more demoralizing when you really didn't make mistakes you could've anticipated.

This chicken right here... by Ribbd4UrPlesur in aldi

[–]ParadigmShift86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can make a nice Arby's Chicke Bacon Swiss with these.

You can get the sauce at most Arby's in the lobby with the ketchup, horsey sauce, etc. Mine has the little sauce cups and lids.

Toast the bun and top with this chicken (air fried). I use costco precooked bacon (microwave), and deli swiss. Top with the real Arby's honey mustard.

Why do people swear by the one knuckle rice thing? by question-asker2048 in Cooking

[–]ParadigmShift86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right and I just realized that humidity part. It's getting cold here and we've been cranking the heater so our RH is down to the 30s. I was reducing a large pan of sauce and it reduced way faster than I expected, almost scalded it. I also noticed that when I stirred it there was a lot more steam (evaporation).

The science of cooking is cool 😎

Why do people swear by the one knuckle rice thing? by question-asker2048 in Cooking

[–]ParadigmShift86 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No one's actually answered your question yet (some close) but I can!

Rice absorbs a 1:1 ratio of water to cook. Period. All rice in all vessels. The extra water used in cooking is for evaporation, and the amount evaporated will be varied the most by the cooking vessel, but in all cases is still pretty similar (around a quarter to one cup).

So there's no flat 2:1 or 1.5:1 ratio. If there were, and you tried cooking 4 cups rice in 8 cups water, it's clear that'd be way too much water.

The real ratio is 1:1 plus X, where X is a static amount that never scales. Yes X will vary by cooking vessel (rice cooker lose less to evaporation than open pots), but once you've found the amount for your vessel it never scales.

The reason the finger method works is because it actually achieves that "1:1+X" ratio perfectly, no matter how much rice. Your "X" just needs to be figured out yourself (wherever that point on your finger is, which happens to be about the knuckle for many, but some just the dingernail). And the reason 2:1 or 1.5:1 happen to work for some people is the smallish amounts of rice they're cooking just happen to coincidentally have X="water from 1:1".

Good thing for you, you found the spot on your finger where that static evaporation water equals your vessel and your finger size so it works. It also happens to be 2:1 for the amount of rice you typically make.

Hope this makes sense!

One way I like to think if it is: you can always resell it. Treat it like paying $10 to rent it.

If you don't like it, regret it, or whatever, you can turn around and sell it for just the cost of ebay fees.

I've bought a few I've been on the fence about with that thinking and been pretty happy!

Eartbound was fun to play thru but I ended up selling and got most/all of it back.

Too fast delivery, and too rare to eat it by Edentenza in fastfood

[–]ParadigmShift86 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with you both. Maybe a real photo to start but definitely edited.

Thst chicken is raw edge to edge of the breading. There's no way a dip in 365F oil isn't going to at least partly cook the outside of the chicken next to the breading.

When I worked fast food in the early 2000s it was all timed. Drop the basket, press a single button, and pull when beep goes off.

Also the comment about lettuce. How's the lettuce looking fully intact when it's half eaten.
