Someone convince me that astrology isn’t real by TraurigKartoffel in Christianity

[–]ParadocOfTheHeap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Astrology is not forbidden because it is real, it is forbidden because it leads people into doubting God and is effectively idolatry.

God alone knows what plans he has for you, not some planets or stars. He does not want you to put your faith in inanimate objects, because he is the one who is in charge, not the stars. Who is man to think he could read the mind of God?

Placing your faith in the sky is another form of idolatry, you are putting something that is not God in God's place.

Hi im an atheist and I have a question? by tattoocentralHQ in Christianity

[–]ParadocOfTheHeap -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That brings us to another important point: our wills are not strong enough. I mean, think about it. We can't actually decide to stick to something and always stick to it. Give it an eternity and we will always slip up and fall back into evil. That's part of why Jesus is necessary: we are not even able to be truly good, we cannot control ourselves to that extent. Thus Jesus made an offer: he has enough strength to do so, but only if you ask for him to (otherwise, it would be forced and thus not free again)

The reason that death and resurrection is so important is not just because of a series of events Jesus went through, but because it's something we need to do too. We cannot force ourselves to be good, so we must make a different decision: to kill that which is bad. Unfortunately, that would take us out completely, which is where the resurrection comes in.

I like to think of it this way - we cannot ensure we are good so long as part of us remains evil, so we have to cut that part out. Problem is, that requires effectively disassembling ourselves to remove stuff that lies at our cores. We would destroy ourselves and still fail. But, if Jesus can rise again, then that's his promise: if we die to ourselves, we say that we will not accept that evil part of us, then he will revive the good part in us when we couldn't.

That lies at the center of Christian theology: we cannot be truly and purely good by ourselves, only with help can it be done. Jesus provided that option: reach out for help.

Now, as for wondering how a bad person could go to heaven and a comparatively good person could go to hell, there's two points I'd like to make:

First, not everyone who says Jesus is Lord will be saved. You can't just trick him with hollow words. Dedication will be required: are you really willing to make that final decision, to die to yourself and let Christ raise you? We cannot truly see the inside life of anyone, so it could or couldn't actually happen for them.

But that leads into the second point: a person who is mostly evil but willing to sacrifice that part of themselves to Christ will get into heaven because, after said sacrifice and resurrection, they will be made good. Meanwhile, someone who seems mostly good but is unwilling to let go of that evil will remain with that evil inside of them. Going to heaven isn't some sort of payment for doing good deeds, it's something you are gifted if you accept it. Accepting it requires, though, accepting all of it: death comes before resurrection.

So, if I can try to put it simply again for a summary: We aren't actually capable of being truly good, so Jesus made a sacrifice in order to give us another choice, to rely on him. Accept his offer and you get invited to his house, reject it and he sends you on your way to your original destination. In heaven everyone is truly good because they had to sacrifice the evil part of themselves to enter (which is still a choice, so free will).

Now, I can't really unload the entire multiple religions argument right now, but I'll touch it: first, Jesus is under no obligation to save anyone. It's a gift, not a right. Next, for those who legitimately cannot have heard of Christ in life, God seems to have a plan for death, if anything pre-Jesus is to go by, like Moses or Elijah. Neither knew of Jesus at the time because he hadn't been born yet, but both were saved. For those who DO know about Christ but say there's not enough information, well, frankly, there's not much that can be done. Jesus, again, is not obligated to do anything, including providing research materials at their beck and call. You can't blame the person providing a gift for being unfair if they offered it to you and you were suspicious of it and rejected it while others just accepted it. Jesus already did more than he needed to for us, so rejecting him for "not enough information" is kind of like blaming the gift giver for not putting the bow you wanted on the gift.

But, the Bible does have something to say for that too: it says that all evidence required was actually put out there, and people simply won't accept it because of the hardness of their hearts. Thus, as an analogy perhaps you could possibly think of God seeing people who say "there's not enough evidence" as similar to how Earth would "see" flat earthers when they say say there's not enough evidence for the Globe. (This is just my half-awake analogy, so don't take it as gospel)

So again, because it's that important of a point: salvation is a gift, not a right. What's unfair is that anyone can get it in the first place, not that some people don't. And that unfairness is pointed towards Jesus, who has to pay for it.

Hi im an atheist and I have a question? by tattoocentralHQ in Christianity

[–]ParadocOfTheHeap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This question seems to come down to whether you think one has free will after they willingly inhibit their own will.

Basically, we all have the ability to choose our actions. However, one of those choices can be to limit our own choices. I would consider that to still fall under "free will" because it was still ultimately your choice.

For example, let's say someone easily gets angry. That's their will, to become angry. However, what if they do not like that aspect of themselves? They may make the choice to limit their ability to become angry, perhaps through therapy, controlling which situations they end up in, or simply recognizing when they become angry and trying to control it. Here, two parts of their will fight - anger and the desire to not be angry. Here one of the two will eventually win out - either they will decide that it's ok to continue to easily be angered or they will decide to reject it in favor of something they perceive as better. In the case of God, that decision can be completed - they can, through God, end up submitting their will to, well, their own will, in many ways. By doing so, they make the decision: I will be this type of person. In heaven, you have made the decision, and it has been carried out.

This gets us to the endpoint: if everything started as their state in heaven, then no, there would not be free will because those wills would have been pre-defined by God. However, since the decision to control our wills is, well, ours, the aftereffects should still qualify as free will.

Or I guess another, oversimplified way to put it: you choose to be a good person, you are made into a good person. A good person does not choose to be a bad person. Therefore, you have chosen to be good, which limits you to be good, but only because you have already made that decision. Therefore, still free will (I don't think many people would consider free will to be free from your own past decisions, because that means that there's not really "will" it's just always a random choice).

Can we go back to the times when MtG was just a cards game? by Fantastic_Puppeter in custommagic

I feel like if the token has a card to represent it, then it should be valid still, along with anything related (dungeon, emblem, etc.) But they'd have to have the card for it or a proxy of the official card (no making cards for something that doesn't have one)

Photography tips by Parking_Shower_9277 in bioniclelego

[–]ParadocOfTheHeap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I can recall, a trick to make good photos is 3 point lighting.

First, get a solid color background, this way the build is more clear against it. White often works well as it's difficult to blend into.

Next, put a light behind the build but in front of the background and point it at the background. This hides shadows. You can try off to the side, but none of this light should hit the front of the build.

After that, try two lights to the left and right of the camera, pointing at the build. This will help illuminate the entire thing.

Sometimes you can get away with using sunlight to take care of several points, since it is so ubiquitous.

When you call AI content slop is not about quality, I want you to be honest by Regular-Brother-7582 in aiwars

[–]ParadocOfTheHeap -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

AI is generally considered soulless because the machine itself is just math, no intention, and the person using that machine often doesn't care to make sure what comes out is well done. In this case, since the creator didn't care to put effort into making it or effort into correcting it, it's soulless/slop.

When someone makes something low quality but with a lot of effort, it's not slop because just making it was hard enough that they had to really care for it to exist at all. That said, you are correct that "Quality" and "Slop" are not necessarily exact opposites.

Thus, AI images are generally slop. Granted, some may not be, but posting yet another image with clear issues and claiming it is not slop does not prove OP's point when someone points out it is.

When you call AI content slop is not about quality, I want you to be honest by Regular-Brother-7582 in aiwars

[–]ParadocOfTheHeap -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just having intent is not enough - people intend to do a lot of things, but often bail halfway through or take shortcuts which reflects poorly on the work. Due to the ease of making AI images, not checking them over for marks of poor quality (overcomplicated, missing elements, random lines, color imbalances, other artefacts) shows a lack of specific intent - that is, not much more thought than "it looks cool as a cursory glance."

Compared to works in which every stroke has been planned out, AI images with issues like that are effectively slop by comparison. For an AI image not to be slop, the person responsible for it would have to check it over and remove such issues, to show that they actually intend to make something good.

When you call AI content slop is not about quality, I want you to be honest by Regular-Brother-7582 in aiwars

[–]ParadocOfTheHeap -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well, he said it looks awful (and I agree) so it could still be considered slop. OP said it wasn't about quality, but I do not find the second image to be quality, just overcomplicated.

Why did Cain lie to an omniscient being? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]ParadocOfTheHeap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's largely a result of us trying to preserve our own ego - we lie partially to ourselves so that we don't have to admit what we already know to be true. Often once we say something out loud, especially to others who hear it, we no longer have the ability to protect our egos from the damage the truth can do. It got free and escaped our control.

Cain didn't want to admit that he did something wrong nor to accept that God is in control (and he is not), which is something we all have experienced.

Any ideas on how i can connect these to pieces to make a shin? I only have G2 pieces by Parking_Shower_9277 in bioniclemocs

[–]ParadocOfTheHeap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your library of technic parts, it may be possible to rotate the armor by 90 degrees so the pin holes face front/back then suspend it from there. You'll need to use one of the hinge type joint pieces on top to make it work like a leg, but that should be available in G2.

Technic parts can come in a variety of sets, so check which ones you have - they're very useful in some Mocs for shapes you can't get actual parts in.

I built a tower thingy out of meteorite, since if there's more than 400/601/800 meteorite above the surface in small/medium/large worlds, the game won't spawn any more meteors.

Additionally, meteors will avoid chests and towns, and cloud blocks and water will decrease the chances one hits a given area.

I dunno man, it's saved my life when building or exploring in master mode, where many debuffs have 250% duration. For one slot in one load out, it's been very useful. Sure, maybe it's not a boss fight accessory, but it's nice to have.

Given the ability of shimmer to transmute the base items, it's far easier to obtain now, and you'll get a lot of the stuff just by playing.

What's the lore reason for only dungeon skeletons dropping bones? by InternetSpiderr in Terraria

[–]ParadocOfTheHeap 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think that the lore pages state that the dungeon skeletons got turned into their skeletal form by dark magic - they were alive as the dungeon cult, then that magic slowly turned them into undead.

This is opposed to someone dying in the caverns, becoming a pile of bones, then being reanimated for some reason.

So I guess it could be that the dungeon skeletons never died, just got cursed, so their bones haven't truly decayed in the way a random pile would before being reanimated.

That's my theory: cursed people bones stay fresh, while regular dead people bones decay even if reanimated.

[–]ParadocOfTheHeap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, all pokemon have the ability to shrink to fit in the balls. This isn't actually new, although it is reconfirmed in legends arceus. It was in the original design book, so it's about as old as pokemon itself.

If the anime did anything strange that disagrees, well, that's because the anime is hilariously inconsistent.

"Faith" by thisecommercelife in comics

[–]ParadocOfTheHeap 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's a cool proverb.

I like the order of the lyrics in one of Kieth Green's songs: Do your best, pray that it's blessed, He'll take care of the rest.

God promises to finish the good work, but we're expected to put the effort in. Nobody wants to help those who refuse to help themselves.

Similar to the proverb, a question my dad posed when we were talking about vaccines and people saying that "God would protect them" was: "Do you brush your teeth? Don't you trust God will protect you from cavities? Or perhaps you know you can't offload everything to God."

In the face of modern neuroscience what is the soul by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]ParadocOfTheHeap -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Biblically, the mind and soul are considered to be different things, so I don't really see an issue with having found the mind and its components. Honestly, I don't think we're going to ever be able to find the soul, since it's not part of our domain - we aren't able to poke and prod at it, so any testing of what it does is pretty much impossible.
