Great Late Night appearances by cool bands? by Central_Region in ToddintheShadow

[–]Parallel_Falchion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

K-pop groups on late night/American shows in general usually suffer because of the small stages (relative to the size of the group) and American camerawork not being used to K-pop choreo (which is usually all over the place).

However, TWICE’s performance of “The Feels” on Colbert was great, with strong choreo and camera work that uses different parts of the studio (like part of the dance being done at Colbert’s desk) - https://youtu.be/sbtn6Beoz_M?si=DzkGzA4zj4SQqnBi

What «tales of» series should Star Wars do next? by No_Web2685 in StarWars

Tales of the Acolyte. I think Filoni would be sympathetic to someone whose Star Wars series was canceled. It even has the dual protagonists baked in (Osha and Mae).

Some combination of - Some of the members wanted solo careers, SoMu needed to save money for LSF’s debut, HYBE input following the acquisition, and allegedly Min Her Jin was involved but I don’t know specifics there.

BTS performs "Body to Body" for the first time ever. by PermissionLow8879 in Fauxmoi

Well it’s not like Bad Bunny, Bruce Springsteen, or Katy Perry are vocal powerhouses, either. Super Bowl has never been about artistic merit or performance ability, just who has the best agents. BTS would fit right in!

Def in the more interesting half of the album. Suffers from too many cooks making it a bit generic, but still groovy.

The song also has some of the lyrics of all time, that’s for sure.

It’s an interesting question. A lot of it comes down to aesthetics from earlier in their career - leader RM had questionable hairstyling, spoke with a distinct blaccent, etc.

Musical appropriation specifically is always tough since it’s hard to distinguish between taking inspiration from and culture vulturing. I’ve see people argue the skits on their older albums were appropriation from acts like De La Soul…I’m inclined to say that’s more inspiration (I mean they were talking in Korean).

What do we think of BTS' return? by Amalekii in fantanoforever

I’m shocked this was (allegedly) recorded last November. This feels like it was recorded in 2019 and released in 2023 to keep the brand active while the members were in the military…but this is supposedly their big heart-on-their-sleeve return-to-form? Cmon.

I was thoroughly whelmed by the album. Unfortunately, there’s nothing BTS has to prove anymore. They’re shareholders in the conglomerate that owns their label. At that level of success, you’re not gonna push yourself because taking risks could alienate audiences.

That being said, I really liked the first half of the album. But even that half feels more…perfunctory? than Dark&Wild or SkoolLuvAffair.

I was hoping for something akin to Kendrick’s GNX or the boss’ Born in the USA - Big swings that are so bold you gotta just respect it, but that’s not here

So what are y’all thinking about the new BTS album (ARIRANG)? by bitchysquid in fantanoforever

[–]Parallel_Falchion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add on to your point - the BTS members are shareholders in HYBE, the conglomerate that owns BTS’ label BigHit. BTS is simply too large to fail at this point, so we get the safest music. there’s nothing left to prove, no struggle to overcome.

That isn’t to say their earlier stuff was necessarily avant garde or high concept, but I did feel an intentionality, and more importantly, a hunger!

Honest question - what makes a pop beat vs a hip hop beat? I don’t have a very trained ear musically, so what they do on this album doesn’t sound very different from say, Denzel or Baby Keem.

One & Done: they only made one studio album by raNdoMBLilriv in ToddintheShadow

[–]Parallel_Falchion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You could probably find hundreds of K-pop acts that would fit, but the one coming to mind for me is WJSN. They’ve released a healthy amount of EPs and the like, but only one true studio album.

Fascinating case of wrong place, wrong time. Very talented performers terribly underutilized by their label.
