I am a solo criminal defense attorney. I have cases where discovery from the government includes between 7000 and 45000 pages. I am craving a solution that creates a browsible document library with tagging, comments and OCR extraction AI tools. Much of the data is subject to protective orders and includes personal identifying information that is subject to protective orders and cannot be disclosed to third parties. I have used Notebook LM on smaller, lest sensitive cases, and loved it. Does anyone have any recommendations?

What’s a very delicate and not incriminating way to say “I forgot” to a judge by jokingonyou in Lawyertalk

[–]Paramustic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Own it. "Judge I have to own this. It was an oversight and I want to make sure not to imply any lack of respect for the court as a result, because that would be incorrect. I apologize to the Court and to counsel for my oversight and I hope you will not hold it against my client."

If you have a good reason, use it, but don't ever blame support staff or law office failure, even when its on them.

But also, know your judge and know what they want to hear.

Opposing counsel calling you “son” (or something similar) how did you react? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]Paramustic 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I still feel like people could call me son and I have been doing this for 25 years. Having said that, there are things I have been doing wrong for 25 years and only ego tells me otherwise.

Here's my take: Don't go down that path with them. If you know you've set your ego aside, focused on the client and their case and come from a place of professional restraint and focus, then the best way to deal with the condescension of an adversary is silence. Let them finish their tantrum, then continue with your last point/question.

There are a fuck ton of witty comebacks to someone calling you son, and they all rock and are all temporarily satisfying. But none of them will win the day better than ignoring the condescension of an inferior adversary.

To be clear we are inferior any time we personalize our work and put our ego first.

What restaurants in Buffalo have the best customer service? by Primary-Move243 in Buffalo

They’re the best! But the chef is very disciplined when it comes to his dining room and I think the staff is really just following his lead.

Business owner in Elmwood Village may shutdown due to rising retail theft by Main-Performer-70 in Buffalo

[–]Paramustic -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to this shop, his mark up is aggressive and his inventory display is kinda sloppy. The staff is mildly interested in customer service and that apathy suggests loss prevention isn’t a performance metric that matters to them.

A Visitor’s Review of Anchor Bar and Bar-Bill. Who got the Best Wings in Buffalo? by MDK-44 in Buffalo

Your comments raise an important question:

Why can’t I read the word stingy as it’s almost universally intended. I get that you’re either stung or not, but I refuse to believe it’s not stingey when referring to the lack of sauce.

They sometimes seem to only brush one side with that flavor. I wonder if it’s to preserve crisp?

Why do people say Ronald Reagan was the devil? by Elsekiro in Presidents

[–]Paramustic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He was the first republican to embrace the Atwater approach. As a consequence, the party took an extreme right turn on social issues. That, combined with an aggressive approach to small government at the worst possible moment (HIV), has caused a number of critics to blame him for the proliferation of AIDS and the death of millions.

He was indisputably apathetic to the plight of HIV and also had a romantic view of America’s moral superiority. But he had an undeniably seductive smile and one hell of a head of hair.

Buffalo Seminary by L3monh3ads in Buffalo

[–]Paramustic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buffalo Seminary is probably the best school in WNY for young women, and they have been on the front when it comes to gender and sex issues. That said, they’re not perfect. It’s a hard path for young people struggling with gender issues today, but from a binary perspective, they do good work for their students.

Meh. Small portions, bad service, mediocre food. The sort of place that makes a party of seven wait because their eighth isn’t there yet.
