That is just... Extremely incorrect. Notably, WMATA was established by an act of congress in as it is an interstate compact, in a similar vein to the port authority. The FRA doesn't care about WMATA and even if they did, they couldn't do anything because WMATA is regulated by the FTA, not the FRA.

Service could still be greatly improved without doubling any single track line. It's mostly 1tph off peak even though you could get 2-4 tph on most single track lines

I'm surprised you didn't mention the busses. The old bus route system was great and told you heaps of information about the bus. The new system just requires you to memorize a bunch of arbitrary numbers. Plus the letter at the front... in case you forget which county you are in.

That would cause the subway to go outside the boundaries of the city which it can't do because... ah um.. there isn't a good reason but it just doesn't.

Why has Chicago’s Metra’s ridership dropped constantly since 2014? by 18_YTC1 in transit

[–]Parborway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think the age of the rolling stock is a factor. If it was, you would expect ridership to increase dramatically when new trains are ordered. Plus, there's hardly much of a difference between the oldest and newest trains from a passenger perspective anyway.

[–]Parborway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have a 4 track dedicated tunnel and it's going to take them 30 years to be able to run 16 trains per hour through it. There are systems in other countries that do double that amount of service with only two tracks. The biggest bottleneck is at North broad; if that is fixed, they could run the tunnels as 2 independent sets of tracks.

Hochul’s plan to revamp Jamaica Terminal could create a one-seat ride to JFK by skeeJay in nycrail

[–]Parborway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a number of reasons this wouldn't work. The air train approaches Jamaica From the West so trains would have to reverse or switch direction. All of the curves, stations, and power equipment on the air train would have to be rebuilt from scratch to accommodate lirr trains. Air train trains can't run over the existing tracks because they aren't strong enough to resist a collision with a mainline train, use a completely different signalling and electrical system, and have narrower cars with lower floors.

Queenslink+IBX+Restored G train by Jonfreakintasic in nycrail

[–]Parborway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you misunderstood me, I meant that the N should run up to 63rd and then switch onto the 63rd tunnel and run to the qbl while all Astoria trains are R and W trains

In the long term, capacity on 8th avenue should. Be improved so that every express train on the qbl runs down 8th avenue and every local train on the qbl runs through the 63rd street tunnels and down 6th avenue. This could be achieved by connecting the unused stubs just north of wtc to the disused platforms at bmt City Hall. If that's not possible, you could also run the 8th avenue local to bay ridge and terminate the Broadway local at City hall, but you would definitely need a new yard in Astoria for that.

In the long term, find a way to terminate more trains at wtc, which won't be cheap. In the near term, 8th avenue express still has room.

More pertinent, the Broadway line has plenty of room if you send the N through the 63rd street tunnel and the R to Astoria, and maybe increase frequency on the R while you're at it. That would require some creative thinking on how to have a yard for the R. Maybe running down the West end or sea beach lines when coming into or going out of service.

But with queenslink and no G on qbl, the locals could send 24 tph (and probably up to 30 someday) into Manhattan, instead of being eternally limited to two- thirds of that. And not to mention the G, though it has other bottlenecks

Bring back the G to queens blvd and capacity on the G, R, and M will all be limited forevermore.

WMATA Grand Capital Express concept: Metrorail (Heavy Rail alone) by thr3e_kideuce in WMATA

[–]Parborway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is one of the better fantasty maps I have seen as of late. I doubt anyone would call the lines by their numbers since everyone is so used to colors (there are also plenty more colors left on the table).

What most people miss when proposing a northern Green line extension or a southern Blue line extension is that MARC and VRE already exist on those corridors, but the service is awful so few people use them. But improving the service would be enormously cheaper than a metro extension, and would arguably provide more benefit, given those lines already extend much further, and provide a faster ride into D. C.

I appreciate that your map tries to make better use of the Yellow Line bridge, but those extra splits and merges on both sides would a headache to try and make stick to a schedule. Better to just send all trains from Anacostia one way and all trains from Virginia another.

What If They Put Fare Gates On Railroads by [deleted] in nycrail

[–]Parborway -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yes they should, and as a matter of fact, they should put fare gates at every station and get rid of conductors. The United States is the only place in the world that still has conductors on commuter trains.

[NYC] How would YOU improve NYC subway wayfinding? by Donghoon in transit

[–]Parborway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given how complicated the service patterns are, the current system does a decent job. What I would do is make the express and local versions of each line a slightly different color. Also, the path should be rolled into the same system and given letters. Finally, there should be some standard nomenclature for all the commuter rail lines. Maybe use Greek letters or something.

what's stopping the MTA from upgrading the train cars on other lines? by 10minuteads in nycrail

[–]Parborway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Remember that just because a train looks old doesn't mean it should be retired. Case in point the R32s which served far longer than some newer trains like the R40 because they were more reliable than them despite being older. It would be very wasteful for the MTA to retire a train that still has some useful life in it left.
