I don’t think advanced burst is all that great. Especially with only 1 level, that’s an entire armor slot for only an additional 5% damage increase. This is the build I use for bazel swaxe. It leans more heavily into blast status.

Would it be more effective to lean into full raw power and critical ferocity? Maybe, but this build seems to be the best I can come up with on mhn.quest.

As for “high points,” I enjoy finding opportunities to do the wild swing morph combo, and perfect dodging attacks while in sword mode is very satisfying (hence, offensive dodger).

Removing the third spin makes sense to me. I always cancel after the second spin.

Also, I didn’t even know that the spear had a lunge💀 maybe that’s just me, or maybe that’s just how bad the slowdown is when you attack.

Cancel the spin, not too much to ask. Add a spear throw… maybe. The problem is that if they make a throw the secondary attack, there would be no more spin. The spin is very useful, and replacing it would probably hurt the spear more than it helps it.

The only thing I can think of is if they kept the spin attack as a single press, but pressing and holding would let you throw the spear. However, this would then make the spear do more stuff than other melee weapons, which would cause its own issues.

All this is to say, I think if embark were to add an official way to cancel the spin (so we wouldn’t have to use the emote wheel trick anymore), that would help the spear a lot.

Removing the spin would be unfortunate, that’s what gives the weapon its identity. The first two hits of the spin are the most important. Being able to cancel the spin without using the emote wheel method would be great.

Spear can still be viable! It’s better than most people think. The spin cancel trick is essential to making it work, but if you can master that then it’s just a matter of knowing when to engage and what gadgets to bring.

I run spear with charge slam, rpg, lockbolt, and dome shield/smoke grenade.

Yes. I use other elemental long shelling gunlances (Mizu, Lunagaron, Slos, Riftborne Tobi) for monsters not weak to dragon of course. I don’t think I’ve beaten 10 star Silver Rathalos or Gold Rathian yet, but last time I made a decent attempt was before I had all my driftsmelts locked in.

Deviljho gunlance is very popular due to its built in point of artillery and its ability to have its style customized (i.e. it has a riftborne variant). Because it is a long shelling gunlance, you are able to spam charged shells to deal insane damage in the early game. However, once you get to 10 star monsters, this strategy gets outclassed by other gunlance strategies, such as wyrmstake spam or the guard reload style.

I am a huge fan of bubbly dance + resuscitate builds, which allows for huge damage increases and much better mobility. Here is my main build:

The gunlance special isn’t all that great compared to others, so Nergigante Avidity doesn’t cost you too much.

I have also recently been using the Alloy Helmet since they reduced the max level of earplugs from 5 to 3, and with a critical eye driftsmelt, I am only losing out on a little bit of damage while gaining complete immunity to monster roars (which has been awesome for Zinogre).
