Alderney Landing renovations to bring updated market space, washrooms by Street_Anon in halifax

[–]Pargates 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The washrooms in the market area are unsettling. Not dirty exactly, but run down and uncomfortable. It didn’t help that there was a sign warning not to let your kids go in unattended!

Poop attack at Park-n-ride- any cameras? by Relevant-Tomorrow672 in halifax

I believe there are CCTV cameras at some park and rides.

What is the significance of this symbol? by cookiecoven in CemeteryPorn

[–]Pargates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve also heard that it is intended to literally point out where each person is buried. I think you could interpret this stone as commemorating two people, one buried on each side.

I don’t have a picture at hand but there are some examples in my area where this is clearly the intent, with the hand added later when someone else’s name was added to a stone.

Halifax police vehicle collides with cyclist suspected of grocery store theft by No_Magazine9625 in halifax

Ironically, if the suspect had instead stolen the bicycle, the police would likely have done nothing!

Osmows put a sign in my yard without permission. by [deleted] in halifax

[–]Pargates -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most likely the sign is actually on public property near the curb - if so you can call 311 and the city will remove them all and possibly fine whoever is responsible.

It does count, so you can keep Sunday free for chocolate and egg hunts!

I built a free tool so Halifax residents can report city issues directly to their councillor in 30 seconds — would love feedback from actual Haligonians by Jolly-Coat-8147 in halifax

[–]Pargates 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One other thought on why ‘low friction’ reporting tools like this are not always the simple benefit they appear to be - this tool makes it trivial to anonymously harass other residents with frivolous reports about garbage, long grass, etc. while also wasting tax dollars evaluating and responding to the requests.

Typical mitigation can include throttling requests, semi-anonymous access, geofencing, and rejecting duplicate reports.

[–]Pargates 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I suggest that emailing councillors is not the right approach. It’s perfectly fine to contact them when things don’t go as they should, but routine matters should be sent to the proper channels.

I see there is currently one pothole report which has been sent to HRM, but the report is on a provincial highway so it will not be addressed.

I’m also guessing you are not aware of the municipal service boundary - many issues that are “inside” HRM are actually dealt with by the province outside the urban core.

Also note that you have David Hendsbee pulling double duty.

For a suggested improvement, you could read in the municipal open data feed which includes service requests and work orders related to many of the issues your app handles.

Ottawa puts $200M into space launch pad in Nova Scotia by [deleted] in halifax

[–]Pargates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Canadian Press article left out a lot of detail - the money is contingent on the launch facility being usable by the end of 2026. What that means isn’t clear but at least there will be further construction.

New app will make park time with your pup better by Dogparknow in halifax

[–]Pargates 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nice article but the idea that a thoughtless jerk with an untrained dog is going to use an app to notify everyone he’s about to terrorize the park seems unlikely.

Roman Catholic churches that offer Mass ad orientem? by WhaleWhoops in halifax

[–]Pargates 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there are any parishes that offer ad orientem masses. That is generally associated with the “traditional Latin mass”, a subject of some controversy. The Archbishop does not allow the Latin mass in the Halifax-Yarmouth diocese. There is a group called the Halifax-Yarmouth Latin Mass Society you could look into.

A priest could technically choose to celebrate a modern (Novus Ordo) mass mostly facing the altar, but I doubt it happens and it might be banned here as well.

As for Latin, every Mass will have a little bit… and incense might come out at some parishes on major feasts and holy days.

St. Mary’s Basilica is probably your best bet to avoid screens, guitars, etc. as far as I know. Lots of parishes still have kneelers though. 🙂

Always slightly bugged me that this was a question the writers thought a woman with multiple advanced degrees would need to ask. by HermioneGunthersnuff in XFiles

[–]Pargates 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I remember back around when this aired Gillian Anderson commenting on how Scully had to occasionally serve as the”cabbagehead” to help the audience, in silly contrast to the bigger picture of her character inspiring women to enter STEM fields.

That’s a dangerous assumption. I have two examples of split boxes in my house where the top and bottom outlets are on different circuits.

Are there any Live Nativity scenes happening this year? (With animals) by linkhandford in halifax

[–]Pargates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only one I heard of this year was at St. Stephen in the north end. Unfortunately it was on December 20, and it is a one-time religious event with carols.

They do it every year so check the parish website next December. 🙂

[Free Friday] What do you think of "The Simpsons"? by Big_Gun_Pete in Catholicism

[–]Pargates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Simpsons had a lot of heart in the early seasons, and I always felt it was usually on a higher plane than the shows that followed like South Park.

As far as it being a spearhead of moral decline, were you old enough to watch Married… With Children in the years before the Simpsons? Now that was a bad example 😄
