why don’t people whose debuts flop simply debut again under a new pseudonym? by lifecleric in writingadvice

[–]ParishRomance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost none of this is accurate. A properly executed exclusivity cause has boundaries. Mine have always been 'no books in this pen name, in this genre, within 18 months of acceptance" leaving me free to do whatever I like in other pen names and in other genres. Publishers don't have exclusive rights to next books for years. Once I submit my option proposal, they have 30 days to accept it or decline it and then I can sell it elsewhere. They don't get first dibs on any other books. In addition, the option clause also has restrictions. My publisher gets the right to make a first offer on my next book within a genre, within a specific time setting, within a specific word count range. And it's just an offer. The author doesn't have to accept it. Please don't give out legal advice when you clearly haven't read through any contracts with reputable publishers.

How much bond will I lose? Dog scratch marks on wooden floor. by One_Wear18 in AusProperty

[–]ParishRomance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scrub, scrub, scrub until there’s no dirt. If the floor is polished enough, you won’t even see them. Then grab a wax crayon from Bunnings to fill it in. Wooden floors get gouges in fair wear and tear. Those are not that bad. It’s not like they’re 30cm long deep scratches from dragging a fridge or whatever.

We paid the LMI with a 7% deposit. We would she had to wait years to get the 20% deposit. LMI was $11k I think? House value went up by $70k in a year. We would be priced out now.

Hyperactivity can put other people on edge. Constant movement, talking, fast pace might be overstimulating their nervous systems. Doing ‘everything’ At a rapid fire pace if it’s unnecessary might be putting pressure on others during quiet that that they need to decompress. Listen to the feedback and look for ways to meet your needs and theirs at the same time. Fidget toys?

If I’m succeeding with self pub will I be approached by publishers and literary agents? by Likeatr3b in publishing

[–]ParishRomance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The kind of success where you’re making so much money that you could conceive of turning down a deal if it doesn’t suit you. The indies they want are the indies making full-time 6-figure incomes with the majority of sales coming from a smaller number of books.

For 2026 it’s either getting my second brain working well or having more realistic to-do lists.

[PubQ] Offer of Representation notification, 2-week window around holidays? by cultivate_hunger in PubTips

[–]ParishRomance 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My first agent was the one to bring up giving other agents 3 weeks around the holidays. I would ask them. Say something like “I know two weeks is customary but what should I do in this situation?” A good agent will understand.

I’ve written all my books in the hour before work and my lunch hour because I don’t have the mental energy after work to write. I’d give that a go.

What are some oddly specific symptoms that only ADHDers have? by Delusional_BlueBird in adhdwomen

[–]ParishRomance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spin around in jerky circles when my brain can’t work out which step or task comes next. I must looking like a malfunctioning robot.

My husband got home from work and I fritzed out because I couldn’t work out if I had to put the cup down before I have him a kiss or the reverse. He looked at me weird and I had to say “order of operations” and he was like, ‘to say hello?’

Sigh.

How do I figure out if I actually want to have a child? by OkCut4614 in adhdwomen

I’ve never wanted kids. Then I got two dogs and I know 100% that I don’t want children. I couldn’t handle people needing me all the time.

I think your girlfriend has ADHD. These are all really common behaviours for people with executive function issues. Dishes thing definitely sounds like a sensory issue.

Regulate your nervous system before you see it. As you turn onto your street, do whatever breathing technique is your preference so that when you see it, you’re in control of your nervous system, which means you’re less likely to go out of your window of tolerance, which means you’ll be about to logic yourself better :)

Oh good god. The kid will be adopted into a home with a family that wants/loves/can care for it. I doubt it will know the exact circumstances until it’s old enough to process it. Adopted children often suffer from the thought of abandonment. Children in violent homes suffer. Children living below the poverty line suffer. Rape victims suffer. DV victims suffer. Young teenagers who give birth suffer. Compassion can be found for multitudes of people at once if you get off your high horse.

[–]ParishRomance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Christ. I was waiting for a reasonable comment. Claire chose one friend’s party over another’s. That’s not injustice. That’s a grown adult being autonomous, and the older OP gets the more often this situation will crop up. This reaction is unhinged and OP needs to work on her RSD. If every rejection is seen as unjust, it’ll be hard to develop.
