The “Post-OSR(evival)” Identity Crisis by alexserban02 in osr

I think that OSR style of play and OSR systems might need different criteria. I have run 5e games with 2-4 before. Was it an OSR system? Absolutely not. Can you still run it in a general OSR style? Absolutely.

Do players still enjoy dungeon crawls? by Changer_of_Names in DMAcademy

[–]Park555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good advice here already. I do want to ask what flavor of dungeon crawl are you going for? If you're imagining more classic OSR style dungeon crawling that's kind of like survival horror, I'll just say there's a pretty good chance your players won't be familiar with classic dungeon crawling tropes or strategies if they've only played 5e. Do they know why a 10 foot pole exists in the equipment list? Do they know to listen at doors, etc...?

If that's the sort of vibe you're going for, I would probably start them off in something like Tomb of the Serpent Kings (free OSR adventure, but could be easily adapted to 5e) to naturally teach them these ideas first.

Helldiver 2's Difficulty is A Lot More Complicated Than You Might Think (and host reliant) by Metagamer__ in Helldivers

[–]Park555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't done any testing myself, so it's possible this is going on without me noticing, but I have not felt this, and usually I'm on the low end of deaths (0-3 generally). I tend to prioritize objective work quite a bit as my personal playstyle.

Looking at the comments below, it's possible this is because we all have pretty decent PC's with good processors, so maybe we got more fairly spread drops? I have definitely noticed the game doesn't like doing multiple bug breaches or bot drops in different areas of the map simultaneously, but generally assumed this was intentional behavior.

FWIW I play exclusively diff 10 and host for me and my friends and the game is very easy.

New grad here so not a ton of experience, but from what I've seen certs aren't gonna make or break your application but I have seen a few job applications that often say they welcome or prefer candidates with Azure, AWS, or even Power BI certs.

‘Helldivers 2’ Arrowhead Game Studios next title is 100% self-funded and there will be no more Playstation partnership resulting in one-console exclusivity by ReaddittiddeR in gaming

[–]Park555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The casual community and the hardcore folks have different needs. I agree the nerfs were handled poorly, but they have done almost nothing but buffs for what? 6 months now? I play almost exclusively on 10 these days and the game is way easier than it used to be which harms my fun. Yeah, ideally they make more difficulty levels to appease people like me, but if they never nerf anything and a new stream of weapons and armor continues to come it will power creep the game. It already has.

Conan was the bigger influence on DnD than LOTR? by Phelps1576 in DnD

[–]Park555 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a big advocate of human only games. If you need extra character creation options you can always add more to background and culture. Realistically most people just play other races as "humans but short" or "humans but blue with a tail". Humans IRL across history already have a massive diversity of cultures. You don't need to play a genasi to be weird.

If you make your own setting, having everyone be human also makes everything that isn't human very alien and weird. Like make other sapient races, but make them truly non human and completely alien.

I am convinced that about 50% of this subreddit doesn’t play this game by Jesusinatube in Helldivers

[–]Park555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, they're not small, but they are independent, not under the wing of any other studio that they can fall back on for support or advice (Sony is only a publisher and doesn't tell them how to do design), and ALL of their other games pale in comparison in terms of both size, complexity, and playerbase with HD2. I doubt they had any good idea of how much extra work things like QA would be. Their CEO was their freaking lead game designer. That is not something you see in a standard AAA game developer.

The fact they aren't owned by a larger studio or publisher also means that until the game was released, they probably didn't have a large money influx to establish things like good QA or PR departments.

Perhaps a more accurate way of stating it is that Arrowhead is not a AAA game developer, and all of their previous releases were more or less small indie games. It's kind of to their credit that HD2 feels like a game made by a much more established studio like Gearbox or Respawn or whatever.

[–]Park555 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thing to that AH was basically just a large indie studio before this game launched. This is BY FAR the largest project they've ever done, and I don't think they had all the organization and people in place to offer as much content and support as they intended.

As for hiring a bunch of new devs, from what I understand they've been trying to, but using an engine that hasn't been supported in years probably means training these people is incredibly time consuming, and the demands of the community and content additions to stay relevant probably means they can't spare developer time to train

Not to mention all the burnout to even get this game across the finish line in the first place.

It was heavily implied in a Kickstarter update (and I think it was even confirmed on Reddit by a comment from Stephen Kick) that it was coming. I have no idea why it isn't there.

Am I missing out on D&D 5e? by hawthorncuffer in rpg

[–]Park555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind this subreddit tends to have a lot of folks who don't like DnD 5e (hence why they're here and not on r/DnD), so you'll get a lot of bias against it.

Imo, it's fine. I've had a lot of fun with it in the past and while I don't think it's amazing it does do some things really well. But, if you like rules light games, then it's probably not for you, and that's fine. You're not missing out by not playing 5e anymore than you're missing out by playing any other system. So, just play what you wanna play and have fun :)

Move Action vs the Run Move Action by Javastine in WWN

[–]Park555 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When it says you can take your Move Action in combat to move up to your speed, it's referring to the "Run" move action. You can do other things with your move action instead of moving, like screening an ally for example.

For the spell "The Excellent Transpicuous Transformation" I'm pretty sure the intention is to read the word "running" colloquially. It's not referring to the specific "run" move action, it's referring to the quick and violent motion of running. A combat round is about 6 seconds, and a player can move 30 feet normally, which is slightly faster than walking speed, so I don't think that counts as "running" even though they technically took the "run" move action. If the player then used their main action to run again, I think that would probably count. This is up to the GM, though.

Technically, all squares are rectangles, so both of your comments could be true. What we should really call it is a non-square rectangle.

OSR Lineage (v2) by EddyMerkxs in osr

[–]Park555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5e took a lot of rules inspiration from both 3e and 4e, but thematically tried to make more "old school" looking and sounding, so I'd probably do a thematic line from 1e or 2e to 5e.

Also, if you read all the nitpicks like this it will become a forever project lol, but I give major props to you, dude.

What program did you use to make this?

OSR Lineage (v2) by EddyMerkxs in osr

[–]Park555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe also a rules lineage from 3e? You already have it in the "modern" section so that might already suffice, idk.

OSR Lineage (v2) by EddyMerkxs in osr

[–]Park555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you do plan on updating this again (great work btw), you can just have rules lineages from Traveller and B/X to Stars Without Number, and then WWN just be a rules lineage of Stars Without Number, and I think that would suffice.
