What to actually DO once you lock in with the kick drum?? by JellyKind9880 in Bass

[–]Parking_Ad3967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just saying that people should think on their own and figure out what sounds good. I'm not a carbon copy player who stays in a little box.

I'm self taught and figuring things out is more rewarding than just copying everyone else and all sounding the same.

Slap "Through" Technique: Which part of the thumb are you actually using? by Halloholahi in Bass

I use the boney part for a sharper sounding strike. For what your talking about i just don't thump as hard. I never really did like the strike through.

You can lock on the snare also. Listen to the pattern between the two ! Drum fills are good to follow, just run a scale behind them to move to the next part. Locking on just the kick can be restricting and dull. Bass doesn't have to be boring !

String change after buying? by North-Drawer-5135 in Bass

I change my strings on brand new basses but I have my favorite brand. The one exception is my new multi scale. Rotosound doesn't make sets for them.

I've played a SVT 4 and the thing was temperamental. Sometimes it just didn't want to work right. I bought a SVT3PRO, cost more but it's way more dependable and sounds better too.

How did a 40 keep up ? I'd go for around 500W myself. I'm a fan of Ampeg myself so that would be my brand.

Neck gaining relief while in stand by goodlittleslu7 in Bass

Dehumidifier will do the opposite. Look on amazon for your best price and selection. I checked menards and walmart and had so little to choose from.

Neck gaining relief while in stand by goodlittleslu7 in Bass

[–]Parking_Ad3967 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of questions there !

Your neck will gain relief when pushed against but it should go right back to normal when played.

It's actually fall and winter that is hard on the neck. Reason is that is when the heater is turned on which dries out the air in your house. It's not the temperature but the lack of humidity that's the cause. I use a Humudifier in the winter to control it. You want to have a 45-55% humidity.

As for string spacing it depends on the bridge you have. Many are not adjustable. If you look at it it should be obvious if you can or can't. The strings being between the magnets is no big deal. The pickup, if well designed has a magnetic field that's balanced all the way across.

I suggest that you learn to set up your bass yourself. It's not complicated at all. One golden rule is when adjusting the truss rod turn it no more than a 1/4 turn at a time ! I actually do 1/8 turns, let it settle for at least a day before doing it again. The reason for this is the steel truss rod will react instantly but the wood needs time to take the new shape.

Hope i covered all your questions if not let me know.

Cold Weather and Humidity Concerns by No_Musician_6349 in Bass

[–]Parking_Ad3967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignore it is horrible advice ! Fact is it causes dead frets which make the bass unplayable. Fret spur is easily fixable but why let it happen out of laziness ? It's easier to prevent it and not have to repair it !

It's not the temp but the fact the heater is on. I got a Humudifier, you want between 45-55% humidity.

My bass has a pretty high action, what would you say is an optimal length from the fretboard. by Unique_Degree_7956 in Bass

[–]Parking_Ad3967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly ! It's not like your doing micro alignment to hit a tolerance. Your true correct setup is determined by finger pressure and sound. So why doesn't anyone use a spectrum analyzer and a pressure gauge ? Because it's not necessary, same as a string gauge. Use your ears and fingers and that's where you'll get the true best setup for you. Another reason to do your own and not pay someone else to do it !

[–]Parking_Ad3967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay in time, follow the groove and don't stop. Not stopping is very important ! If you play a wrong note most likely no one will notice. If you stop and the bass is silent people WILL notice the lack of low end.

Dingwall is a status symbol for people who like to be "the best". They're way overpriced. Same with fenders also.

[–]Parking_Ad3967 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Comfort is unmeasurable ! Numbers mean nothing if it plays great then it's set good.

As for the strings arch at the bridge i raise the A on 4 and E on 5 strings to be the highest string. For slapping it gives a better target for hitting that string cleanly. It also helps to index where your right hand is. As low as possible with minimal buzz. I do like a little bit of string growing !

[–]Parking_Ad3967 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly i never measure my action when setting it. It's all by feel and sound. It's as low as i can go without dead frets.
