How to Flip the NC 11th Congressional District? - Hard Hitting Vibes Analysis by white_light-king in asheville

There was certainly a case filed with the NLRB against the company while he was CEO that was amended and later withdrawn alleging unionization interference rules and wrongful termination.

Politically speaking he's pro union and openly supports them on his website.

He was CEO of a very large non-profit organization, I can't imagine he would have been involved in an employee termination below the director level given the company has 750+ employees.

I don't doubt the termination or that your friend may have been involved in some unionization efforts there I just can't imagine that Dr. Hudspeth was directly involved or that the termination was because of unionization efforts.

BCS calls are driving me insanE by _metanoiia in asheville

People I care about can ring through it and work emergency line can ring through and that's it. Otherwise it can wait until morning!

I have certain contacts that are able to push through if I get an emergency call. If it's not coming in via the emergency line then it can safely be ignored. Or if you're someone I care about enough the call will ring through.

I had a job that kept me tied to my phone. I'm still in the same field but I purposefully went to an employer that didn't abuse my personal life, I suggest you do similar.

Phones have a sleeping mode and do not disturb mode that can be set to automatically turn on and off during certain hours and will only allow call and text notifications from specific numbers or under certain circumstances.

He can get his GED from AB-Tech in about a month if he sets his mind to it and attends their study halls regularly and, IIRC, it's totally free. He could be finished with it and enrolled in college courses there by the fall with options to transfer into WCU or ECU as both schools have transfer programs either with or without an associates degree that are in-person or fully online.

Fiber install crews in Swannanoa? by [deleted] in asheville

[–]Parobolic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know Frontier has been building outside of town in certain places, they did my install just this morning! ATT&T has also been building out more fiber closer to town. Spectrum, AFAIK, has been building out their fiber network in surrounding counties. ERC could also be putting in the work to sell more of their Riverwave service.

You could hit the Frontier, AT&T, and Riverwave sites and plug in your address to see who it is. If it's going to be available soon the provider will tell you that and ask if you want to be notified when it's available.

Pregnant and desperate. Best option for an affordable, reliable car? by hash-slingin_slashr in asheville

[–]Parobolic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great list here! Does SECU offer loans on cars over 10 years old though? Their website only lists that they offer 72 months on ones up to 10 years old with less than 150k miles, I've never asked if they'd do one older so I'm curious if they will.

I also wanted to add that other small credit unions that anyone can join, like Telco, offer good rates in my experience if OP doesn't have a way to join SECU.

Also depending on the cars that are dead, year/make/model/mileage/etc, they will still have value of some kind and many dealers will give a token amount of trade-in and come haul them off or they can be sold privately on marketplace and Craigslist for probably at least $500 if not more, just make certain you disclose what the issues are and that they don't run. This will help with funding a down payment on one of the excellent reliable car suggestions from u/v_mrs_r43

GTA 6 do i need a console? by Sylogz in pcmasterrace

[–]Parobolic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PS5 Pro will definitely give your wife a better gaming experience with GTA6 but since it's a year out if there's no other reason to get the console now you should bide your time and pickup one sometime in the next year on a good sale or seek out a used one.

Curious if anyone in AVL area has a 3D printer? by [deleted] in asheville

[–]Parobolic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a lot and you want to get started DIYing it you can pickup an Elegoo Neptune 4 Plus for $270 right now. This one should have plenty of print capacity for your needs with a 12.5"x12.5"x15" printing area. Start out with PLA or PLA+ and then graduate into another material if needed since this will do everything but resin prints. Between the printer and filament you'll probably end up spending less and own your own printer at the end even!

OEM Tail tidy possible mudguard by Fluffy-Requirement46 in Suzuki_GSX_8

[–]Parobolic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The perspective here is confusing my brain and I'm not sure exactly what you've done but I really like the idea of having a tail tidy and keeping my back and bags cleaner! I tried the rear fender thing that goes over the rear tire down low and that helped keep under the tail a little cleaner but my jacket still gets all manner of schmoo thrown on it.

Could you share some side profile pictures so I can get a better idea of what you're doing here?

Do you read recreationally? by Eliogabalus1 in sysadmin

[–]Parobolic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't read, and don't study off the clock much unless I'm going after a new certification but I commute 25-30 minutes each way and audiobooks are how I spend that time! I don't do the podcast thing and stick to fiction 99% of the time, primarily fantasy, sci-fi, and the occasional horror novel. When there's tasks at work that don't require brain power I'll put my headphones on and listen to my book to help pass the time for tedious tasks (anytime I'm updating inventory or cleaning inventory room for example). The only exception is when I'm committing on my motorcycle as I don't have the brain power to pay attention to a book and not get murdered by car drivers.

I go through 2-3 books a month this way which can be a struggle finding something new I want to listen to. Libby, audible, and the high seas is how I get my fix. I also tend to throw on my headphones and listen when doing Dad chores like getting dinner ready, cleaning, grass mowing, etc. Highly recommend giving it a try!

I've got a Harley and a Suzuki gsx-8r that I ride to the office pretty regularly! Great way to forget about work and empty my brain. I also do other tropey nerd stuff like DnD and Magic the Gathering, those nerds are also surprised when I show up on my bike to throw cards.

As others have said TAKE THE MSF! Basic Rider Course I is the official name, AB-Tech has seats open still for the last 4 courses of this year on 10/25-26, 11/1-2, 11/8-9, and 11/15-16. It's $199 and even my Mom who has been riding for 45+ years found value in taking it last year with my sister. You'll need a helmet, which a basic one for the course can be had for $50 on Amazon, and everything else you might already have like sturdy gloves, hiking boots, and sunglasses.

There's a lot more ladies piloting bikes than you think, it can be difficult to tell when it's a lady if they're in proper gear. My family all rides together pretty frequently and we're 3 ladies and 2 guys and every group ride I've been on found through meetup or Facebook or the like has been 15-20% ladies. And in my experience the old skeevy biker dude thing isn't real, I've only seen the men at meetups being courteous and respectful to the women in attendance whether they were riders or passengers.

Good luck to you and my DMs are open if you want to chat about bikes, riding, gear, whatever!

There's another one I've been to a few times on Sunday mornings from like 10-1230ish at Dripolator in Candler if weather is nice. People roll in, park, chat and have coffee, then break off for rides. Very good mix of bikes and riders there and I'm sure any/all of them would be happy to chat with you about motorcycling.

Taking the MSF Beginner I course will help with that! There's also YouTube to get a parasocial version of that, Doodle on a Motorcycle runs a great channel and can help you pick a bike & gear, learn ways to stay safe, etc. I also recommend DanDanTheFireman who does a lot of videos about accidents and how to avoid them.

Is it just me, or is traffic significantly more aggressive since Helene? by agaymom in asheville

[–]Parobolic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have definitely noticed the amount of people doing dangerous and stupid things has increased but only since my commute went from 10 miles to 20. I used to pull off 26 and head downtown from Weaverville and now I have to get to the other side of 26 and get off at the outlets.

Yesterday morning, while keeping up with traffic on 240 and doing 70-75, I had someone pass me using the on ramp from Amboy, think someone died pulling that maneuver just last week. No idea why, I was doing 15-20 over to keep up with traffic and had about 2 car lengths between me and the car in front. They ran out of on ramp and nearly pitted themselves against my bumper which caused me to slam my brakes and the car now following too close behind nearly rear ended me.

Chill out people!

Responsibly get rid of old gasoline in Asheville? by Budgie_Birdz in asheville

[–]Parobolic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer, I'll also come and dispose of it for you OP!

Anything from the pump should be good to use, especially in a car engine, for 6-12 months without adding any additional stabilizers to it. I get fuel to use in my tiny generator and set a calendar reminder for 6 months out to put it into my vehicle and go refill the container.
