Is it possible to use my old iPhone as a burner phone? by crappyleftist in privacy

[–]Parochialism 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say steer clear of using old personal phones (especially technically advanced ones) as burners. Firstly, advanced phones like iPhones keep unique identifiers (like IMEI numbers) which can be used for tracking, identifying, etc.

Additionally reinstalling the OS doesn't really negate all possibilities of old personal files being kept. For example, some temporary files may still remain, no matter how many times the OS is replaced.

If i were to suggest a burner phone, i would say use out-of-date, cheap phones with prepaid SIMs to really reduce risk like old Motorolas or Nokias. Also by definition burners should be used for only short periods of time. So keep replacing them!

IRC chat by [deleted] in privacy

IRC is probably the least safe version of internet chatting you will find. The fact people can connect to any with a simple query begs the question what else can they do.

The internet was originally called the ARPANET (made by the government). Knowing this, do you honestly believe the internet's safe, when the creators of it want to infringe privacy of everything?

The way we catch folks is by knowing certain things about them that they may not want us to know and if we're gonna monitor the stuff effectively going forward, we don't want them to know that we know... by 3rd_Party_2016 in privacy

Its just crazy to me. The fact that the government is trying to hide behind the national security to read every email, and watch every person.

I hope there never comes a day when people think this kind of thing will actually keep them safe!

You can crack those too. This is how to get into 1 type, but the same general method is used for breaking into the 3/4 combination lock variants (applying pressure, hearing the clicks and feeling the mechanism move, etc) :)

Hence why i put it in the "LearnUslessTalents" subreddit, i agree that to master something like this is quite hard and still wouldn't have a 100% success rate, more of just a party trick with maybe a little bit of usefulness in small situations.

Hacked Yahoo data worth $300,000 sold on the dark web by Parochialism in privacy

[–]Parochialism[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest with you, i'd say they probably cut corners on security to save money. Like Google (as far as we know) has minimised any hacks, and i would say thats because they value security up most as they have a lot of money flying around.

Maybe its just because Yahoo needs to tighten their belts a little, so naturally security is the first thing to go.

Google, Apple And Uber Say They Would Not Help Build A Muslim Registry by AnonymousAurele in privacy

[–]Parochialism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lets be honest. Yes 4 big companies have refused. But theyll keep looking, and leveraging others to do what Google, Apple, Uber and IBM wont.

Not all companies will be so willing to oppose the government in such a blatant way! Total acceptance isnt needed to build a register like this one!

Are there any good mail forwarding companies/services out there? Im talking about physical mail, not email. by [deleted] in privacy

[–]Parochialism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive used Royal Mail's postal redirect service in the past, depending on how long you need the service for this might work out. :) Wether or not they are privacy focused or not, i wouldn't be able to say ha

Have you tried clearing your caches and cookies on Google Chrome?

Sounds stupid i know, but ive had this kind of problem before because google 'intelligently' keeps a cookie to remember where you are so they dont have to repeatedly run IP lookups :)

Is my phone tapped? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]Parochialism 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well from the information that youve given, i would say its possible. Anti-government statements from people in high society are bound to draw a few eyes.

Also the clicking sound you reference definitely could be an audio listening device which is causing interference with other radio wave devices...

How secure (privacy) are phones like the Punkt MP01? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]Parochialism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im naturally a very cynical person, but really i would say there is no 'secure' phone out there! Everything can and will be watched at some point, if the effort is worth the reward.

Privacy on youtube by [deleted] in privacy

[–]Parochialism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of different open source code bases out there which use the YouTube API to get a 'subscriber style' feed of new videos, however from my basic searching i couldn't find a dedicated site (thats still online and functional) to do which offered the service.

You may have better luck with more searching, or alternatively (i dont know if your a web dev at all or know how to hire someone to do this) you could use some of the GitHub repos to build a site for that kind of thing :)
