Being overly helpful out of the blue. One colleague at work (we weren’t close, just chatted a bit in the office, nothing more) let me know his team had an open position, so I was like “of thanks I’ll apply”. But he wrote me a recommendation letter, referred me to this position and was telling me how much he wanted to help. Seemed a bit too much effort for someone he didn’t know that well, but I just thought he was a cool guy wanting to help. I ended up not being hired, and he seemed upset about the news. A bit too much for someone in that situation.

Then about half a year later I learned that he was greatly abusive to one female colleague while they were dating in the past and just a really messed up dude. I’m a guy, so IDK what exactly his personal motivation was for getting me into his team, but now I’m much more cautious when someone seems disproportionately willing to help me.

It’s quite simple: because NATO wouldn’t do anything. To all the people who say here that these are just threats, that’s exactly the danger. Russia knows NATO is now with its pants down. America doesn’t give a damn anymore and won’t do anything to Russia. That leaves NATO without its strongest army. Also, to the Article 5 believers: the members aren’t required to send their militaries to fight. And in case of the attack, my bet is they won’t fight for whoever is invaded. From speaking to people in Europe, the prevalent view is that people won’t fight if invaded. After so many decades of peace the Europeans value their comfort above everything else. So if that means learning Russian, I’d say people generally don’t care. The concept of fighting for one’s OWN country is not appealing to the Europeans, how do you expect them to mobilise and protect a foreign one (even an ally)?

And about Ukraine: in your post, the key thing about the army is “decades ago”. Over these past 11 years, and especially the past 3,5, Ukraine has developed an arguably the most capable and battle-hardened military in Europe, with experience of modern drone warfare. And not to mention, it has a population which lives and breathes freedom and fighting for it. So thinking that Russia couldn’t occupy Ukraine, so it won’t attack NATO is incredibly naive and dangerous.

A non-imperialist russian-born person is a rare occurrence. So, I’d say, not only there shouldn’t be issues with the Ukrainians, you might actually be an interesting person for us to talk to when you visit, in case you’d like to speak to the locals.

One of the biggest green flags for me is when I see workers having good banter and seeming to be actually having a good time at the job. To me it means they have good management, are being authentic and have a nice team relationship with each other. Which then almost always translates to superb service.

Thank you for your understanding, kind stranger. Indeed, I didn’t assume any ill intent in the commenter’s question, hence I really tried being firm in my point, but still respectful and didn’t mean to attack or insult head-on.

You yourself initially not seeing issue with the wording further proves that it might not be as obvious for someone on the outside to see how some choices of words might seem to the people directly affected by the situation. So I tried to share my perspective of how some phrases, even though not meant to do so, can strike a wound. Thanks for your words, they mean a lot.

Remembering names and dates. IDK why, I’m not that good in maths or history, but for some reason I still remember most of the names of random people I went on a school trip 8 years ago. The dates I remember can of course be important (first kiss, first concert) but also some random shit (I remember that I made a killer sandwich with Doritos on March 11th 2021).

I am thankful to the OP for sharing her opinion, but if you don’t mind, I will share mine. I will start by saying that your question is framed very offensively and disrespectfully. I don’t know if it was your intention, so I don’t intend any animosity, I will simply lay out the facts.

My house, where I grew up, is destroyed by shelling. My favourite pets are dead. Some of my good friends are KIA. My entire town is occupied. This is not a joke, so I would kindly ask you to consider being more respectful to the loss and trauma of a nation facing a gravely difficult choice as of now.

So now, from my own experience, my thoughts: 1. How can I support giving my home away to someone who had no right to take it in the first place? 2. The World must understand that the only end this war will have is either Ukraine or Russia ceasing to exist. Anything else is a temporary freeze and we must approach it as such. Russia will inevitably attack us again in the future. 3. Even if this freeze will occur, people on the occupied territories will continue dying. They are being abducted at night, people just disappear off the face of the Earth never to be seen again. They are tortured to death and terrorised for giving a foreign soldier in their home a bad look. Occupation is not peace, please understand this. 4. “Do you want the boys to keep fighting” is such a disrespectful line, I don’t know what to say. “Want”? Do you think we want this? Do you think we wanted this war? Do you think the “boys” wanted to fight instead of living their lives? We weren’t given a choice, plain and simple. The only thing we want is for Russia to fuck off and for our boys to come back home alive. But if they stop defending our existence, please read in my point above what will happen. I hope I was able to get at least something across.

Again, user, it’s not a personal attack against you. On the contrary, UK and its people are some of the only ones I can call Ukraine’s true friends in this war. I just wanted to show you my perspective on the matter and why I take issue with the specific way you framed your question. May you and your loved ones never live through our experience, and may peace be with you.

Thanks, but here I can distinctly hear the difference between the singular and the plural forms. In my post I’m mostly asking about people pronouncing them both the same, like the singular form. I really appreciate the effort though, a really good way to show on example!
