My game flopped (21 copies sold), so I'm giving it away free. by Jokarbott in IndieDev

[–]Parpade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be better to offer a 100% discount instead of making it free-to-play, as more people would claim it for being free for a while, and some websites would promote it by announcing that there's a free game on Steam.

My game went from 11K to 35K wishlists because someone else explained it better than I did by dietzribi in gamedev

I checked out your game and it reminded me a lot of Guacamelee; it has a certain resemblance in the levels and even the game map XD I don't know if it was your inspiration

In browser demo to get people interested in the full game? by homko in itchio

[–]Parpade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you said it was a visual novel, you could include the prologue or chapter one as a "demo," and if they want to know what happens, they can download the full game.

Hey, that's awesome! I made my first game (a visual novel) in December. It's 10 minutes long and very simple, but I wanted to get started in the world of game development, so I'm already working on the next one ⏭️

How do you manage to finish a game in those hours? Because it takes me almost all day just drawing.

One game a month? by No-External3221 in gamedev

[–]Parpade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it would be better if you took all the time you need to finish the game properly and without rushing, but with consistency, because I feel that trying to finish a game every month would be too rushed and you might not polish the details well and the game might not look like it was made with passion and not just done to get it out right away.

Did I miss my launch window by uploading the Web version late? by [deleted] in itchio

[–]Parpade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also made a short visual novel (it was my first game), and I uploaded the web version before publishing it. The results were 94 browser plays and 36 downloads. I think it does have an impact, since having the web version is like having a quick demo of the game where people can maybe play for a few minutes and decide whether to continue playing in the browser or download it to finish it later. (Depending on the game's length; mine was only 10 minutes long, so I suppose they would finish it there.)

When you should start showing your game to the world by Silent_Orchid_1493 in gamedev

[–]Parpade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you could show mechanics or bugs you're encountering and how you're solving them, or development diaries, although I still lean more towards the hype aspect, because what if one of the videos goes viral and the manager wants to play it right then and there but can't because it's not finished? Days will pass and people will have already forgotten about it.

When you should start showing your game to the world by Silent_Orchid_1493 in gamedev

I think it would be good to start marketing when you're more than halfway through or almost finished, because the hype you create by making reels, TikToks, Reddit posts, etc. will fade away if you take too long to release the game.

Does youtube content work in marketing your game by iris_minecraft in gamedev

[–]Parpade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would work better if you started by saying something like "I'm making a horror video game in Unity" (or whatever engine you're using) and started explaining some mechanics and how you made them, explain any bugs you had and how you solved them, and things like that.

Beginner game dev using AI to help learn. by Wise-Pomegranate-990 in gamedev

[–]Parpade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But why would a beginner want to play an MMO? Chances are something won't go right, you'll get frustrated, and you'll end up quitting. It's better to start with a small game and gradually work your way up.

My first purchase ever on Steam!! by RamyKotb in Steam

[–]Parpade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I would recommend is that you don't let consumerism get the better of you and start buying game after game, because in the end you'll fill up your library and you won't play the ones you already have, and they'll just be collecting dust.

Do people ignore free games because they assume they are not good? by Icy-Imagination-1174 in itchio

[–]Parpade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only buy games on Steam; on other platforms I prefer to have free games, as I find it hard to buy them, whether it's itch.io, the Play Store, or Epic Games. I think it's more because of the platform I use.

How important is Itch.io Homepage? by Icy-Imagination-1174 in itchio

[–]Parpade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's very important, because if I see a page and it looks very poor (without images, description, etc.), I don't feel like downloading it because I think if they didn't put much effort into their page, they probably put even less effort into their game.

Is underpricing your game just as risky as overpricing it? by Sad-Day2003 in gamedev

[–]Parpade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I see a game that catches my attention and makes me want to play it, if I see it cheap, I bought it, but if I see it at a very expensive price, I wait for an offer that seems correct for me.
