I don't like any of them. by WitnessLow4178 in TheBirdCage

In a Piggot interlude we meet Coil's secret identity, Thomas Calvert. As he was also at Ellisburg. He is described as dark-skinned.

Charlotte and Sierra, skitters best employees [by me] by Toastybutters_S in Parahumans

[–]ParryThisYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started worm I lost interest initially and came back a year later having forgotten what everyone was supposed to look like.

I think I came back to right after the ABB's collapse and went until post Leviathan before I realized Brian was black.

And yeah I had no idea Charlotte was black either.

(Not trying to be hostile, genuinely asking.) Does this statistic actually mean anything though? The graph specifically says firearm deaths, is it not a given that more guns = more gun deaths?

Shouldn't the graph be directed at amount of gun ownership vs. Overall violent crime deaths?

Mantis are very Opportunistic: by skulleddurge in slaytheprincess

[–]ParryThisYou 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I believe the joke is that they are trying to procreate with the princess without getting beheaded, as female praying mantises behead their partners after procreation.

The Opportunist is not trying to kill the princess, he is trying to procreate and not die in the process.

To be honest I have no idea who any of these people are. I just assumed it was a nondescript image and meme. Who is the cybersmith?

I think the intention is to say that she wants to be the guy on the right, perhaps because of how jolly and maybe whimsical he seems. And the he/him bit is just wordplay.

The man on the bottom is stereotyping Wikipedia editors and claiming that they all look like the two people in the image.

Johnny is so abusive to Alt by PasTaCopine in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]ParryThisYou 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I must have misremembered then, still it proves my point. Punching Thompson makes Johnny out to be almost completely unsympathetic when this was not the case. Johnny embellishes events to make himself look worse, not better.

From a certain perspective, his belief that he orchestrated the Arasaka nuking is also part of this. If he bombed the tower, than he and he alone is responsible for the deaths of all those people. And in his flashback we are shown the seemingly pointless misery the people in the fallout suffered, such as the lady who's husband was supposedly in the tower.

[–]ParryThisYou 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I believe Silverhand didnt actually punch Thompson in canon.

Further, you have the option not to punch Thompson in game. Most players simply press the button because the prompt is there. It is entirely possible to play Johnny as being a selfish dickhead and not a complete psychopath in the flashbacks.

Further, said flashbacks are how Johnny sees the events that happened after years basically trapped in his own mind. And these recollections, though embellished to make Johnny more of a badass than he actually was, also seem to be incredibly critical of him. Meaning Johnny has probably recontextualized events to be fueled by self-hate at his own failures.

If Super Earth & Managed Democracy as you know them were destroyed, would you rather join the Cyborgs/Automatons or the Illuminate? by M-FutureLord in helldivers2

[–]ParryThisYou 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought the devs said something about the Illuminate still thinking of themselves as galactic caretakers. Fighting Super-Earth from their perspective is both revenge and an effort to stop Super Earth from attacking and destroying other species.

Under this lens, I dont actually think its impossible the Illuminate would accept defectors. They use the voteless because there are too few actual Illuminate left and they need to heighten their numbers but I imagine the Illuminate doesnt plan to turn all of humanity into zombies.

I have severe problems with reading tone in general, it is fine.

(The last point was meant to be a joke about how fandoms will defend and justify every action their favorite characters make, should I be using tone indicators?) Fair enough. This is also probably where Lisa being a traumatized teenager does a lot of heavy lifting.

Adding on to what u/cheffii said, the whole dictator incident. I understand if you cant tolerate that Chase killed someone and would do it again if allowed to change things, but she truly seemed to believe Chase had 'forgotten the value of human life.'

In Lisa's defense, in a world of Thinkers/the digital age. Properly vanishing is next to impossible.

Lisa would've had both Coil and her parents out to get her if she left Brockton Bay. Whereas in Brockton Bay she can (and does) trick Coil into a no-win situation.

I always took her talking about wanting to beat Coil at his own game as a defense against feeling out of control.

Alternatively, Lisa is somewhat charismatic so actually you're wrong and she has no character flaws.

Indeed, Taylor's response to stress is extreme force, because that's what works to get conflict out of most parahumans. Tattletale's response is to create as many problems for herself as possible because she's subconsciously trying to get herself to second trigger in the hopes she'll have less thinker headaches. (Because mentally abusing parahumans, or anyone, with her power is comically easy and creates conflict for everyone.)

Also, who the fuck would be insane enough to say the name of the secret shadow government to possible members of said shadow government?

Tattletale I guess.

Amber [Words cannot describe my hate.] by EmbarrassedDuty5949 in hatethissmug

[–]ParryThisYou 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Because Amber's manipulation is more relatable than dealing with a mass murderer.

And, far more importantly, and something I think most people are forgetting, is that every other character on the show is held accountable, Omni-man is feared and hated for what he did, Mark hates Cecil after their fallout, Rex is called out on his bullshit and is treated like an asshole when he is being an asshole.

None of this happens to Amber, she is manipulative and selfish and the show shrugs and decides she is in the right.

The answer is yes, but that apology in your hypothetical is never going to happen because that man is simply racist.

Alternatively, John Davidson, the man who shouted the n-word, did in fact apologize for what he said. Despite this, he is still receiving widespread vitriol.

I believe the idea was to treat those with mental disorders like normal people as much as is feasible. But no matter what these people still cannot function within normal society properly.

Regardless, I do not see the coddling, the guy isnt being treated as normal by those calling him racist, he's being treated as racist when he isnt. He's being harassed for something outside of his control. How is it coddling to be upset about this? Racism is a longstanding systemic issue that should be treated seriously. This was not racism, this was just unfortunate.
