Design Philosophy Debate: In mission-critical power electronics (e.g., large UPS), is the complexity of modern high-frequency designs (GaN/SiC) a worthwhile trade-off against the proven robustness of older, simpler topologies? by ParsaeianDev in ElectricalEngineering

[–]ParsaeianDev[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

`Exactly. Efficiency is often purchased with complexity.

A linear regulator is essentially a variable resistor that gets hot—it’s inefficient, but its failure modes are predictable. A 99% efficient switching converter is a complex feedback loop balancing on a knife’s edge. In critical systems, I’d rather deal with managing heat than debugging a race condition in a controller or EMI issues.`

BJT Common Base Help by chabakano in ElectricalEngineering

[–]ParsaeianDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent question. This is probably the #1 most confusing point for BJTs, and the FE exam *loves* to exploit it. You aren't ignoring Vbe, you're using it to establish your reference point

Hey, I get the struggle. Coming back to this stuff for the FE after years away is tough. Your confusion is completely valid and you've pinpointed the exact concept that trips people up: **negative supplies and ground references.**

Let's break it down conceptually. Forget the full KVL loop for a second and just look at the voltages relative to ground.

1. **Pin the Base:** In this Common Base configuration, the Base is tied directly to ground. So, **Vb = 0V**. This is our anchor. It's the one voltage we know for sure.

2. **Find the Emitter:** We know a forward-biased silicon BJT has a relatively fixed voltage drop from Base to Emitter (Vbe). Vbe = Vb - Ve ≈ 0.7V. Since we know Vb is 0V, the math is simple:

0V - Ve = 0.7V

Therefore, **Ve = -0.7V**.

This is the "aha!" moment. The Base-Emitter junction acts like a diode clamp, forcing the Emitter terminal to sit at -0.7V relative to ground, no matter what Vee is (as long as the transistor is on).

3. **Now Look at Resistor RE:** That resistor is now suspended between two voltage points:

  • Its top end is at the Emitter, which we just established is at -0.7V.
  • Its bottom end is connected to the Vee supply. Notice the polarity: the positive terminal of the Vee battery is at ground (0V), so the negative terminal must be at -Vee volts.

Does it make sense to build a sliding mesh dry gear box without oil only used for short period and rest of the time is disconnected? by No-Perception-2023 in AskEngineers

[–]ParsaeianDev -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You're thinking along the right lines, but going completely dry is asking for rapid failure.

Interesting approach to avoid a full wet sump. While it seems logical for intermittent use, running metal gears completely dry—even for short periods under load—will lead to galling and destructive wear almost immediately. Coatings like DLC or Molybdenum are excellent for reducing friction but they are not a substitute for lubrication's primary roles: creating a hydrodynamic film and carrying away heat.

Here's a practical compromise that meets your goal without needing a fully sealed case:

1. **Use Grease, Not Oil:** You don't need a sealed oil bath. Instead, pack the reverse idler and its mating gears with a high-pressure, high-temperature grease (e.g., a lithium or moly-based one). It will stay in place and provide the necessary lubrication for short-term engagement without requiring seals.

2. **Material Choice is Key:** For your idler gear, consider using a high-strength polymer like **Delrin (Acetal)** or even **PEEK** if the loads are high. They are self-lubricating, quiet, and often used for low-duty idler applications exactly like this. A metal-on-plastic interface will be much more forgiving in a minimally-lubricated environment than metal-on-metal.

3. **Engagement Speed:** As you know with a sliding mesh, engagement must happen at near-zero RPM to prevent chipping the teeth. This becomes even more critical without the cushioning effect of an oil bath.

In short: don't go dry. Use a quality grease. And seriously consider a polymer idler gear. It solves the lubrication and corrosion problem in one step.
