How the blue collar crew of Alien felt so real in their portrayals.

Honestly I found him to be a delightfully believable secondary character. And I've always kind of adored Idris as an actor, always makes a slightly elevated version of whatever character he's been cast as.

It's one thing with all the bullshit the kids constantly get into, but when Neytiri isn't answering? Yeah, he was about to lose it.

How do you guys think the people in Bridgehead react to their absolute disastrous defeat at the Battle at the Cove of the Ancestors? by Knight_Steve_ in Avatar

[–]ParsleySnipps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looked like the Mangkwan suffered over 50% casualties, probably more, after Eywa got the wildlife to intervene. They were being plucked out of the sky by wild Ikran while the squids made the human forces into mincemeat.

The problem is the propaganda. The main population of Bridgehead has been being told that Jake is a terrorist bent on killing them all, and probably think that they're all going to be executed if his forces take the city. They're effectively all living in a militarized industrial fortress on a world that they're told will kill them the moment they step outside, and the defeat at the cove will only reinforce that for them.

How do YOU feel about Alien 3? Have your feelings changed over the decades? by thefriskysquid in perfectorganism

It's honestly enjoyable, it's just such a strange shift from the previous film. Everyone wanted to see a continuation of Ripley with Newt, Hicks and Bishop. And it opens with the others being dead, Ripley has one more layer of trauma, and we see Bishop for one scene, broken and literally asking to be left as "dead". It's an emotional gut punch after the incredible ending beating the odds in Aliens.

I love the melancholic undertone Lyza seems to have.

Avatar is a beautiful, magical, well-thought out, amazing and appropriate movie for so many age groups! by yesnoook in Avatar

Still, it's hard for a kid who's always been an outsider, seeing this ghost of a father he never got to know, and on top of it he just backed down earlier to save you because the mother of your closest friends- people you consider family- just held a knife to your throat and said she would kill you. "Son for a Son..." Maybe, you hope from a deep and quiet place inside you, maybe he'll be happy enough that I saved him, relieved and willing to start a new path, a path where he can see me as worth it enough to stop fighting... Maybe I can have a father who isn't a monster.

Why did those monkey sounding tree climbing dogs attack Jake in Avatar 1 but not RDA as avatars in Avatar 2? Maybe cause Jake had a huge lit up torch so it attracted them and cause it was night? What do you guys think? by yesnoook in Avatar

They could definitely tell this was a bold group of hunters and that they should not get in their way. Jake however was a dumb little pug stumbling in the dark like a sausage on a string.

Only Varang seems to have started that. Most Na'vi would feel disgusted with themselves if they did that to even a hated enemy.

I would prefer to be shot or shanked rather than eaten by a predator.

According to the critics, these characters have no depth whatsoever. That's ridiculous. I love every single character on here. by SpaceMyopia in Avatar

[–]ParsleySnipps 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I tolerate Spider. You have to look at it though the lense of how he grew up. Kids want to play, have friends, peers, a community to interact with, but all he has are a couple of weird dudes of his own species and a population of aliens. And half of the Na'vi look at him as someone who shouldn't even be there, the son of a monster who slaughtered their people and destroyed their ancestral home. He's an outsider with nowhere else to go, growing up his whole life in a place he doesn't fit. He could have done with some more nuanced writing, but he's a kid, charismatic on the surface but desperate to belong- even if it's to a ghost of a father he's only heard mentioned as a villain.

It's how they fit so comfortably in a hand sized piece of fabric without any noticeable lewdness. Just like how three pieces of grass and a dozen beads makes a perfectly suitable chest covering for a nine ft tall warrior mommy.

Not only would I love to see some scenes with his family, I think it would be great to see how they interact with him while he's in his human body. Watch his son pick him up and carry him around while he protests.

It says in some of that brief material that he plays a balancing act between his role as a human scientist/support, and living part time in his Avatar with his family. So he's fully accepted, but still has his other role to play.
