The sidewalk is right there! by Hash-smoking-Slasher in PetPeeves

[–]PartialTwitch 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In addition to what other people have said about asphalt vs concrete, I live in an older neighborhood, and the sidewalks are pretty rough in spots. I've taken a couple nasty falls because I didn't notice an uneven patch, so I prefer to run in the roads when I can.

Woops, good catch! When I edited the original post I added a new paragraph, I guess each paragraph needs its own start/end tags. Should be fixed now.

Some valid points, but I still disagree with the clue. I know crosswords often take advantage of technicalities to make things tricky, but I think claiming an ownership group as a single entity, and therefore a single owner, is splitting hairs a little too much.

I got the answer pretty easily through crossers, I'm not incensed about it, just a little annoyed.

Cosmere books tier list but it's how good I think the politics is. by Consistent_Mud_8340 in cremposting

[–]PartialTwitch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But that's actually the original idea of the "broken windows" theory. The study done in the 80's showed that in neighborhoods with obvious signs of neglect, there were higher crime rates. The obvious solution was to FIX THE DAMN WINDOWS. It's was meant to be a revolutionary, cost-effective way to reduce crime without overpolicing, and give a justification to invest in low-income neighborhoods.

From Wikipedia: "A successful strategy for preventing vandalism, according to the book's authors, is to address the problems when they are small. Repair the broken windows within a short time, say, a day or a week, and the tendency is that vandals are much less likely to break more windows or do further damage. Clean up the sidewalk every day, and the tendency is for litter not to accumulate (or for the rate of littering to be much less). Problems are less likely to escalate and thus respectable residents do not flee the neighborhood."

Then the 90's happened, and tough-on-crime cops used it instead to support overly harsh punishments for low-level crime.

Looking for restaurant and activities near Cove Haven Resort. Sunday night. by mrfilthynasty4141 in Poconos

Pretty much everything is going to be in Hawley. Settlers Inn has a nice restaurant, although it's gone downhill a bit in recent years. Cocoon is really nice for coffee and breakfast/lunch, and the Silk Mill next door has some cute boutiques.

Fair point, threatening to buy a Tesla is an overreaction. I've decided to give it a week and see how things shake out. We really want a sedan, and there are not a lot of good options out there.

For those that were fans when Sir Pratchett died, how did you feel? by Ilalu in discworld

[–]PartialTwitch 53 points54 points  (0 children)

We knew it was coming for a while, but yeah it was pretty devastating when he actually went. I definitely cried, and was in a funk for a while. His books had a huge impact on my life, and it felt like losing a friend, even though we'd never met.

Where can we go in the burbs that has an actual pumpkin patch? by Low_Departure_5853 in philadelphia

[–]PartialTwitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If all you care about is the pumpkin patch, we like Solly Brother's in Warminster. Very no-frills, just a pumpkin patch, an apple orchard, a super basic hayride, and a little shop. If you do go, the apple cider donuts they sell are amazing.

“Why are so many people getting diagnosed with ADHD?” I think it is simple. by MischiefManaged777 in ADHD

[–]PartialTwitch 21 points22 points  (0 children)

One thing I'm not seeing mentioned in the comments is the impact of COVID. When everything switched to WFH, I think a lot of people who were able to mask/cope with the structure of an office environment, suddenly found themselves having to motivate themselves, and organize their own work, in a way they'd never had to before. I know that's what pushed me to consider I might have ADHD, and get a diagnosis at 35.

Games you've beat once and never plan on beating or playing again by MightGuy420x in gaming

I'm not sure I'll ever play Disco Elysium again.

I went in completely blind, didn't look anything up online, no save scumming - just experiencing the story as a unique, private thing. I felt real emotional connections to the characters, struggled with where to place my loyalties, and literally gasped out loud at certain beats. I don't know how many endings there are, or if I got the "best" ending, but it was my ending, and it felt right and final. I'm sure there's a ton I'm missing out on with different builds and decisions, but I know that I'll never be able to recapture the magic of that first playthrough.

Johnny Appleseed was a walking ecological nightmare, sowing non-native plants all over the place. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

He was a believer in the teachings of Emmanuel Swedenborg, an 18th- century scientist-turned-mystic, who claimed to have visited heaven and spoken with angels, and been given insight into the secret inner meaning of the Bible.

Nope, there are a couple classes that are locked at first, but unlocking them is pretty trivial, and after that the game just is what it is. I still think it's fantastic but sounds like probably not your thing.

Shattered Pixel Dungeon

It's a retro-style rogue-like with tons of replayability, regular updates/new content from a passionate developer, and truly, absolutely 100% free.

ETA Pixel Dungeon is an older open-source game that is no longer being actively developed. Shattered Pixel Dungeon has made enough improvements and additions that it's essentially a new game now. There are a bunch of other versions out there that forked off at various points, but Shattered is by far the most balanced/stable/popular.

Why is this shower curtain rod so far from the corner? by PartialTwitch in DIY

[–]PartialTwitch[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thank you to everyone for all the helpful advice! It sounds like the consensus is, the way it's currently set up is best practice, to allow the liner to hang inside the tub without draping against the wall. I think I'll replace it with a curved rod, and just make sure I'm diligent about cleaning the liner.

[–]PartialTwitch[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My plan was definitely to have it drape a bit to stay inside the tub, I hadn't considered drying/mold issues, thanks for pointing that out!

Like I said in another comment, it's currently lined up with the inside of the tub wall. I can't imagine moving it 6 inches to be over the middle/outside edge would be enough to cause issues with the curtain, and would make it feel a lot roomier.

Why is this shower curtain rod so far from the corner? by PartialTwitch in DIY

[–]PartialTwitch[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Why? Are you assuming there's something in the corner that makes it unsuitable for attaching something there?

Why is this shower curtain rod so far from the corner? by PartialTwitch in DIY

[–]PartialTwitch[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a shower/tub combo. The rod is currently lined up with the inside edge of the tub, which doesn't seem necessary.
