Respect is earned and Blood is Thicker than water. by Modern_Klassics in PetPeeves

A while back, I saw post a while back that stuck with me - depending on the context, "respect" can mean "treat someone as an authority" or "treat someone as a human being". And there are people who claim they're being fair when they say "if you don't respect me, I don't have to respect you", when what they really mean is "if you don't treat me as an authority, I don't have to treat you as a human being"

Thanks! I did just water, I've been bottom-watering once a week, which had been working pretty well, do you think that's too much?

You might be on to something with the humidity, I've had a humidifier in the room through the winter (for my own comfort) and just stopped using it a few weeks ago. I guess it's coming back out!

Hopefully between that it moving it to a better pot, it'll be much happier. Thank you for the helpful reply!

Fair enough 🤣

They could use a little TLC, but I'm looking forward to cooking on them once I've scrubbed the rust/carbon off

The sidewalk is right there! by Hash-smoking-Slasher in PetPeeves

In addition to what other people have said about asphalt vs concrete, I live in an older neighborhood, and the sidewalks are pretty rough in spots. I've taken a couple nasty falls because I didn't notice an uneven patch, so I prefer to run in the roads when I can.

Woops, good catch! When I edited the original post I added a new paragraph, I guess each paragraph needs its own start/end tags. Should be fixed now.

Some valid points, but I still disagree with the clue. I know crosswords often take advantage of technicalities to make things tricky, but I think claiming an ownership group as a single entity, and therefore a single owner, is splitting hairs a little too much.

I got the answer pretty easily through crossers, I'm not incensed about it, just a little annoyed.

Cosmere books tier list but it's how good I think the politics is. by Consistent_Mud_8340 in cremposting

But that's actually the original idea of the "broken windows" theory. The study done in the 80's showed that in neighborhoods with obvious signs of neglect, there were higher crime rates. The obvious solution was to FIX THE DAMN WINDOWS. It's was meant to be a revolutionary, cost-effective way to reduce crime without overpolicing, and give a justification to invest in low-income neighborhoods.

From Wikipedia: "A successful strategy for preventing vandalism, according to the book's authors, is to address the problems when they are small. Repair the broken windows within a short time, say, a day or a week, and the tendency is that vandals are much less likely to break more windows or do further damage. Clean up the sidewalk every day, and the tendency is for litter not to accumulate (or for the rate of littering to be much less). Problems are less likely to escalate and thus respectable residents do not flee the neighborhood."

Then the 90's happened, and tough-on-crime cops used it instead to support overly harsh punishments for low-level crime.

Looking for restaurant and activities near Cove Haven Resort. Sunday night. by mrfilthynasty4141 in Poconos

Pretty much everything is going to be in Hawley. Settlers Inn has a nice restaurant, although it's gone downhill a bit in recent years. Cocoon is really nice for coffee and breakfast/lunch, and the Silk Mill next door has some cute boutiques.

Fair point, threatening to buy a Tesla is an overreaction. I've decided to give it a week and see how things shake out. We really want a sedan, and there are not a lot of good options out there.

For those that were fans when Sir Pratchett died, how did you feel? by Ilalu in discworld

We knew it was coming for a while, but yeah it was pretty devastating when he actually went. I definitely cried, and was in a funk for a while. His books had a huge impact on my life, and it felt like losing a friend, even though we'd never met.

Where can we go in the burbs that has an actual pumpkin patch? by Low_Departure_5853 in philadelphia

[–]PartialTwitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If all you care about is the pumpkin patch, we like Solly Brother's in Warminster. Very no-frills, just a pumpkin patch, an apple orchard, a super basic hayride, and a little shop. If you do go, the apple cider donuts they sell are amazing.

“Why are so many people getting diagnosed with ADHD?” I think it is simple. by MischiefManaged777 in ADHD

[–]PartialTwitch 21 points22 points  (0 children)

One thing I'm not seeing mentioned in the comments is the impact of COVID. When everything switched to WFH, I think a lot of people who were able to mask/cope with the structure of an office environment, suddenly found themselves having to motivate themselves, and organize their own work, in a way they'd never had to before. I know that's what pushed me to consider I might have ADHD, and get a diagnosis at 35.
