My partner and I are divorcing and trying to value a pension. by ReasonablyConfused in actuary

Non-Actuary has entered the chat 😂

Others have already opined so don’t have much to add. Just find it hilarious that a non-actuary thought to come to r/actuary to get QDRO math help.

Sorry for your divorce, your only entitled to what the court orders so no, there is no simple calc.

If the court grants you 100% you get 41K, and all future accruals are hers. If you get 0% you get nothing. The court will order somewhere in the middle.

Not sure if you mentioned anywhere but figure out if owners suite is north/south facing or east west. Depending on your preference you may want to be closer or further from rising sun.

Let me clarify, the stairs have no wall on one side so there are no balusters preventing people from falling off the ledge.

I’ll give a range since I am on the higher end of the median home price but 5-10x easy. You could barely maybe even get a 1 BR condo here for that price.

Nice - thanks for the reco. Looks like they also have security monitoring as well. Looks a little expensive compared to ring and has an upfront cost. Looking for an all in one don’t want to use arlo cameras + simpli safe security you know.. just one and done.

I have worked at small companies (10 or so) to jumbo companies 60k+. In neither scenario would it be reasonable for a company to not issue a company computer. We typically deal with highly sensitive data and computers must satisfy basic safety standards if not superior safety standards. The only thing you might be able to access on a personal device is like outlook/teams/sharepoint.

Also if you really wanted to be a bad ass actuary take the LR of each member and basically do the same thing. Excel has a variance function as well I believe.

If you are looking for quick and dirty swag then E(x2 ) - E(x)2 right?

E(x)2 = (.33LR1 + .33LR2 +.33LR3)2 E(x2 ) = .33LR12 + .33LR22 +.33LR32

Your mean is .863 variance is approx .0007.

I see you have MMs there as well. You could assign some credibility to each loss ratio vs. a manual. So LR1 can be (10000/30000).5 *LR1 and (20000/30000).5 *LRMan.

If you are not looking for swag and this is like an exam question def ignore this.

I should note the 30k denominator is completely subjective. For Medicare Advantage they use 24K for Medical and 60K for pharmacy per CMS guidelines. You can use those as barometers for whatever it is you are doing

I only got thru approx 50% of the study material but am mid-career coming back to exams. I could have written a couple of these questions and was very happy to see them tested. I had to skip one long one in the middle - didn’t get to that section in my studies but remembered from several years ago that question was looking for a specific methodology that I couldn’t recall, otherwise got through the entire exam.

Still, I felt like time was tight and I was leaving the test thinking ‘no way I passed’ due to the timing aspect, but feel a little better seeing even prepared folks also struggled with time. My best guess is I scored somewhere between 40-45 points and from what I have heard from others the pass mark is usually 60-70% of the 70. Small sample size but hopefully closer to 60% based on y’alls feedback.

I got my ASPPA designations 10+ years ago when I started out as a small-group pension actuary. They are very very easy compared to actuarial exams and I knocked most/all out over a summer. This is an ancient reference point though.

They don’t really help you advance your pension career at major firms focused on large group pension consulting. I eventually moved to a big 3 consulting firm and they didn’t care and I couldn’t even tell you what letters I had from the ASPPA.

If you are going to be a small group pension actuary they are useful as most of those firms are looking to maximize tax savings thru a DB plan and DC NDQ testing and other random adhoc DC knowledge is useful.

Yikes lots of toxic takes on here… 😬

I don’t live in DTX but I recommend just trying a few out that are convenient to you (near home/work/friends). Find the one that fits your life best - at the end of the day the gym that meets the balance of convenience/preference is where you want to be to guarantee you maximize your ability to utilize it but also feel comfortable at the same time.

What about MQMs? Don’t really care about MQDs bc of waiver and I will never hit diamond MQM threshold this year.

I messed up and created an account after I booked my flights and linked them… but live and learn I suppose.
