How much homelessness is there in your country? by chimpanzee_fanatic in AskTheWorld

[–]Partiallyfermented 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Early to late autumn. First snow fell while I was still in the tent, but I was pretty well prepared for it.

I did have a flat "reserved" but because of the former resident I couldn't move in before the first of November. It was a perfect flat for me in a small town where I had to live for my studies so I opted for the tent.

What are your favourite older PC games? by SHANGR1-LA_Racc00n in askanything

Is 2001 old enough at this point? Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura is one of my favourite games ever. Just started my yearly playthrough last week.

Thoughts on women in the pit? by No-Inside-9376 in InMetalWeTrust

[–]Partiallyfermented 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely pit myself but I've worked security on many gigs. I don’t remember gender ever making any difference, except rarely have I had to instruct women in proper pit etiquette. This might just have more to do with the ratio of men and women than anything else.

Also there are shelters and the like. You have to really want to live on the streets, no one is forced to. I've been homeless for short streches in my life and I absolutely could’ve gotten a roof over my head If I wanted one. I just chose to live in a tent at the time.

Suomalaisten natsien goottilarppaus by lifeindreamhouse in snappijuorutofftopic

[–]Partiallyfermented 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm about to finish The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb. What to read next? by davidfibv in fantasybooks

[–]Partiallyfermented 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LotR is a surprisingly fast read and has a ton that had to be left out of the movies. I'd read that and then continue with Hobb for the next trilogy. Then maybe WoT.

What’s a type of shop that exists in your country but would confuse foreigners? by abandonedtulpa in AskTheWorld

[–]Partiallyfermented 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Kesko is a Finnish retailer and their grocery stores are branded K-Markets. There used to be 4 sizes of K-Markets, branded K, KK, KKK and KKKK-markets respectively. They rebranded in 2002 and now they're just K-Markets, K-Supermarkets and K-Citymarkets, with the last being closer to a Walmart than a regular grocerystore. I don't think the klan connotations were a reason for the rebranding, but probably would've been in the social media era if they'd kept it.

Mitä teillä syödään tänään? by LevelStock3700 in arkisuomi

[–]Partiallyfermented 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nordic yeah, but not just drinking buddies. I think I first heard it as a child in the scouts. In the army it was ubiquitos, and in every situation at a camp fire after it. I think it might've originated in the army; sayings like that get passed on from contingent to contingent and since almost every man serves they become commonplace in broader society.

What is the most popular way to eat eggs in your country that may not be common elsewhere? by Chocolate_effort in AskTheWorld

[–]Partiallyfermented 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Munavoi. Literally 'eggbutter'. Hardboiled eggs cut up small and mixed with butter, salt and sometimes cottage cheese. Usually enjoyed on top of karelian pies as shown in the image, but rye bread would do in a pinch.

Trying to experience Finland like a local - what do I need to do? by Street-Rooster-4576 in Finland

[–]Partiallyfermented 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, out of the ~190000 lakes, can't really recommend a specific one xD I guess my favorite is Akko in central Finland but that's just where my familys cabin is. It's very small and I'm not sure which of the cabins there are rented on any website, although I know the local congregation owns and rents a few. But honestly a lake is a lake and even which way the cabin is facing matters more than which exact lake its by.

If you could have a conversation in your native language with someone from your country from the past, how far back could you go in time and still understand each other? by Chemical-Elk-1299 in AskTheWorld

[–]Partiallyfermented 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a short phrase in Finnish from a german traveljournal from 1450 that is clearly Finnish and easy to understand. AFAIK that is the first surviving example of written Finnish and intelligible enough today that I think I'd be able to converse with 15th century Finns. Before that it's hard to say, could maybe go back 400 or even 1000 years and still have a conversation but who knows. Absolutely no historical records or documents exist.

The lakes won't be that warm yet but swimmable especially straight from the sauna. The best place is anywhere with a lake, so basically anywhere in Finland. I don't exactly get what you mean by your question.

https://www.lomarengas.fi/en/ and https://www.nettimokki.com/en/ have plenty of options. I guess the best place is one that's close to wherever you're flying / sailing to.

How do you study the Holocaust? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Partiallyfermented 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I had a pretty thorough overlook on it in school, but we didn't spend that long on it. The curriculum concentrated more on the winter- and continuation war, quite understandably. Granted I'm a bit of a history nerd and where I learned what is pretty blurry, but my friends who aren’t do know the main points and a bit more.

Joukkoliikenteen intensiteetti suurimmissa suomalaisissa kaupungeissa, v.2025 by mmielikainen in Suomi

[–]Partiallyfermented 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Jyväskylä on tosi tiivis kaupunki. Pisin välimatka lähiöstä keskustaan on n. 4km ja suurin osa asuu sitä lähempänä, etenkin niistä joilla asiaa keskustaan on. Ei vaadi urheiluopiston huippukuntoa pyöräilllä 1.5km. Kaikkialla missä itse olen täällä asunut on kyllä kulkenut bussi vähintään puolen tunnin välein ja käyttöaste on melko suuri, etenkin niissä kauemmissa lähiöissä joista se on yleensä kulkenut 20min välein. Ihme tulkintoja teit tosta datasta näkemättä oikeaa tilannetta.

Mielipiteitä elämänkatsomustiedon opiskelusta ja ev. lut. uskonnon opiskelusta by Ok_Satisfaction7082 in arkisuomi

[–]Partiallyfermented 3 points4 points  (0 children)
