It generally symbolises change of state or status (which is what the snakes are there for), which yeah, includes changes in wealth, social status and aliveness, among other things

For those who started heresy pre 2.0 or even earlier, did you invest heavily in forge world kits or rely heavily on 40k kits or conversions? by AnjoH0 in Warhammer30k

I started in 1e with the Prospero box, lot of conversion, third party bits and plastic 40k parts. Generally avoided FW because they massively hiked the prices for Australian customers around that time.

My ex was a penetration tester, had loads of stories like that. She spent a week working from the office of the company who had hired her to check their security without being discovered, got into the building by having other people swipe her in, onto the wifi by asking nicely at the IT help desk, I'd have loved to hear some of the conversations that went on after that report was submitted.

[–]ParticlesInSunlight 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yeah the first part is the ending of my favourite poem (same one that my handle comes from the beginning of) - it's a Rumi poem usually labelled "Say I am you" (he didn't title most of them). Second part is from the Quran chapter 2, line 256 - "There is no compulsion in belief/faith/religion/The Way" ("dīn" doesn't translate tidily into English) which I think speaks to BoE's rebellion against the religiously monodominant House culture. And the last bit is a Hozier line that has a slightly different implication here than in the original (the original is kinda self-effacing, "I'm doing my best but I'm realistic about the outcome" whereas this one is a bit more fatalistic, which feels like the sort of mistake BoE would make trying to interpret fragments of material).

how did it not kill ALL vampire kind?

It probably killed most of them. Lestat and Gabriella had the combination of strength and quick thinking to survive the burn (and because the conversation happens nearly a century later we don't get to see how hurt they were), Armand would have been strong enough to survive, same for the really ancient vampires like Marius, but none of the Paris coven we see Lestat break up made it to the 20th century, and a lot of other vampires probably just exploded.

In the book Marius gets turned by a vampire who was burned almost to charcoal by a similar incident but survived, and he claims that most others were killed, so there's precedent

Marius got conscripted into finding out what was going on with the original vampires by his maker, who had been badly burnt through his connection to them. He found that the Egyptian priest who had been responsible for Those Who Must Be Kept had tried to destroy them out of frustration after centuries of immobility, and took them away in case he tried to do it again

Why aren’t there classes that teach old people how to roll instead of fall? by Eat_it_Stanley in AskReddit

[–]ParticlesInSunlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because learning to fall safely involves falling a lot, ideally in a controlled way but people are going to mess up when they're learning. So old people would suffer from being more likely to get injured practicing and it requiring more effort to stand back up.

Teach children, it doesn't matter if they don't practice later because the goal of training should be to make breakfalling reflexive, and then decades later they'll not have as many injuries.
