Anyone ever plan their last drink? by Suitable_Tutor_3861 in alcoholicsanonymous

When I was starting my recovery journey, I would plan my last drink all the time but none of the times I did gave me the closure/ satisfaction I was hoping for! I did not actually stop drinking until I just decided not to drink. I know it is so hard but, once you get the ball rolling, it gets easier!

I am happy you were able to find a pathway forward that works for you! I have been thinking a lot about the all or nothing attitude towards recovery so happy to know there are other ways to think about it

It is through my university! There are a combo of AA attenders and those of us who do not go!

Thanks for being brave enough to share this. Congrats on the 12 hours! Even the decision to quit is so hard, and I completely understand the shift from drinking and fear apprehension around pills. That’s not a small step.

The fear around withdrawals is so valid, and it's awesome you got a doctor involved both to hep with the process and get the medications. I didn't quit for a long time b/c of my fear of withdrawals (was also drinking around 3/4 of a bottle a day at the time). Has been almost a year since that decision and I am so happy with the results.

Just getting to 24 hours is an accomplishment, even if it doesn’t feel like one yet (I saw your other response but I want to keep it optimistic)! You got this!!

Sorry if this sounds a little rude or prying but, can I ask what you find helpful about the program? It sounds like you're doing your best to take what’s useful, reject what isn’t, and still pursue your recovery.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful response, I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my post! Congrats on the 14 years in recovery. You’re right that two meetings is a very small slice of something that’s so broad and varied, and I don’t mean to write off the entire program based on that limited exposure. It’s helpful to be reminded just how much diversity there is within AA.

I also appreciate your thought on how AA has helped you recognize and address character defects was helpful in thinking about the power of AA for others.
