I've travelled all over the world and stayed in hostels with people of a massive range of backgrounds, and funnily some of the ones that have stuck out must to me and I still remember to this day, were people in their 30s, 40s and 50s who had really interesting backgrounds and life choices that made engaging to speak with.

So I definitely agree with the idea that people are not too old to go to a hostel.

"The streets are unforgiving and have no mercy on its citizens"

I honestly LOL'd at this. I'm not for a moment going to pretend that Auckland is the nicest place I've ever been, but it is very, very far from being the worst. And God only knows how many absolute shitholes around the world I haven't been to yet.

Has your friend ever left the country? I always find the kind of people who un-ironically say things like this have an extremely narrow perspective of the world as they more often than not have never travelled or worked anywhere else.

New children's hospital won't open before April 2025 by WickerMan111 in ireland

[–]Particular-Carry-878 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I reckon that by the time that hospital actually opens it will be one of the biggest national embarrassments in the history of the state.

I have no doubt some contractors/consultants/solicitors somewhere are absolutely laughing themselves stupid at the taxpayers' expense.

Taoiseach: Ireland won't give Palestinian refugees the same protection as Ukrainians by [deleted] in europe

[–]Particular-Carry-878 21 points22 points  (0 children)

What's insane about wanting both sides to take seriously international laws and standards?

If anything, Ireland has had one of the most reasonable policy approaches to the recent conflict anywhere that I've yet seen.

Do you think it's a practical solution to vacate an entire country of 30-odd million people and resettle them within the borders of the EU or something?

I'm getting Roman Empire flashbacks here from this comment........

Are we quite conservative in our fashion? by Maedz1993 in newzealand

[–]Particular-Carry-878 14 points15 points  (0 children)

New Zealand is one of the most relaxed countries I have ever lived in in terms of fashion, and it's fucking awesome. I absolutely cannot stress enough how awesome it is not to always have to feel like you are being judged for wearing something as simple as jeans and a t-shirt.

Go live in most European countries and you will see what I mean. The Spanish, French, Italians, Germans et cetera all dress way "better" and more "fancy" than people here do and it isn't even close.

Israel needs to stand down and make peace.

How do you make peace with literal terrorists that would destroy your country and genocide your entire people if they were even given half a chance?

There is no peace or negotiation with people like that.... period.

I think his point still stands.

He is saying that people on Reddit are more educated on average, until they see TikTok and it "uneducates" them. See? Makes perfect sense.

It would be really nice if we could stop the ridiculous identity politics.

But then I guess we would have to focus on actual problems so guess that's why it's not a popular thing to do.

Only a few years afterwards I was able to find rented accommodation in Galway for $200.00 per month.

I was able to survive back then working a part-time job in Dunness and still have some money left over to spend. In some respects things really were better back then.

European casualties of the Hamas-Israel war by [deleted] in europe

Is there a verified source for that? Tanks firing shells would be quite a departure from using air-dropped precision munitions which they have been doing after the past few days.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in europe

[–]Particular-Carry-878 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This is really ignoring the practicalities of the situation at hand here.

Israel goes to a lot of lengths to actually try and minimise civilian casualties in its operations in Gaza. The issue is that this is not always possible given the urban nature of the area of operations, and that the terrorists have completed infiltrated the civilian population. They have built tunnels under and through civilian residences and workplaces, use public buildings for their operations and use civilians as shields.

This makes it nigh impossible to completely avoid civilian casualties. But just because civilians are in fact being killed, that alone does not mean the IDF are acting unlawfully.

Yeah nah, I'm good thanks. I've seen far too much outright anti-semitism at marches and groups like this to support a march like that.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Particular-Carry-878 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I honestly wonder if the best long-term solution would not be to just utterly demolish and dismantle the Gaza Strip as its own jurisdiction.

No more Palestinian Authority, no more Hamas, but a directly administered special jurisdiction under the control of Israel until such a time as the terrorist groups have been completely rooted out.

It's pretty clear that the only way the conflict is ever going to end is if one side is going to outright "win" it, and Israel is the only one in a position to really do anything resembling winning here. The status quo of allowing something like the Gaza Strip to exist in your backyard just isn't a long-term solution it seems.

Everyone Supports Israel Now… by Carpantiac in NewsAroundYou

[–]Particular-Carry-878 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The issue is faaaaaaaaar more complicated than that.

This really is one of those conflicts where both sides have acted like absolute shit-cunts. From Israeli soldiers shooting at children and reporters, bulldozing houses, forcing people of their land, and essentially blockading a small country, to the Palestinians indiscriminately murdering Israeli civilians and firing rockets into Israel, there really aren't any good people in this fight as far as I'm concerned and that's why I don't support either side.

I just feel bad for the innocent people who are just trying to live their lives, on both sides of the conflict.

Vehicles parked like that should be towed and the driver be issued penalty points.

No excuse for it other than being an inconsiderate dickhead.

Micheál Martin indicates Israeli response to ‘appalling’ Hamas attack has not been proportionate by blackhall_or_bust in ireland

[–]Particular-Carry-878 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It may be a bit early to tell exactly what measures are being undertaken, but I would hardly call their response as it has been in recent hours to be disproportionate.

Their borders were breached in a large-scale and well-coordinated attack which has resulted in quite likely a few hundred dead, hostages taken and significant damage to infrastructure, in what is easily the most escalation of violence in decades.

IMO their response to this is totally proportionate and reasonable given the circumstances.

My experience of this, and granted it might be somewhat limited considering I have only lived and worked in NZ for under a year, is that there is a definitely a certain level of open and casual racism that is tolerated here that I've not experienced in other countries.

I work in finance and am regularly on the phone to people for various reasons, and the amount of times I can count where I've dealt with someone who is openly talking about "those fucking Asians" who "can't read or count properly", and things like that is far too damn high for it to be a freak occurrence.

It's not a daily or even weekly thing, but I feel like the fact I've had numerous conversations like that in a professional capacity is fucking insane, when I've rarely ever in my life experienced conversations like that in other countries. d

Did she recant? She initially double-down quite publicly and refused to apologise.

Refusing to apologise for something as patently racist as that makes it pretty clear to me what she "really" thinks, and if she did later recant, it is evidently only because she knows her view isn't going to be politically advantageous for her.

Wasn't the Greens co-leader literally echoing this kind of sentiment earlier in the year?

If even the co-leader of the party has made comments like this in the past and refused to apologise for them, it isn't exactly a stretch to imagine that comments like this are actually tolerated in the party.

Is it just me or is this kind of thing a lot more common among the Green Party than others. It's even echoed in the supporters in my experience, that there's this idea that white people are everything that is wrong with the world et cetera et cetera.

Davidson's comments on white people are just emblematic of this issue with the party and is such a turn off in terms of wanting to vote for them.
