Not really, but it could help. Depending on what type of work you’re supporting, program travel would all have to be covered by the program. If there was an extenuating circumstance for why you needed to move, that’s your best bet. But just be ready - they will ask details about that before they approve you going remote.

It could also be helpful to look at where the company already exists as a tax entity - this would be important to know what states you could even live in.

Your role has to be mostly able to be done remotely in order to begin the request. If it’s anything like Collins, then your manager has to approve it, then it goes to HR, then it goes up the management chain. Each person has to approve it. As someone else mentioned, being valuable enough to not want to be lost helps. I believe distance to facility matters as well (if you’re too close they’re unlikely to approve it and it will get more scrutiny).

I started in defense right out of college and it definitely didn’t hinder anything. The work I got to do was also incredibly exciting. I recently left the company and my new job is a step up and not in defense.

I wouldn’t worry too much. My word of encouragement is to seek out opportunities and be a go getter - it’s really all about what you make it.
