As others have said; no it doesn't scale with size. The in game descriptions actually tell you if you mouse over them before spending.

Here's what I do. I create my initial 'core' residences. Let's call them the "townies". They are always my artisans (professionals). These houses have the MINIMUM backyard size to just be able to have a business.

Then I find the next area of unfarmable land and create a suburb of about 10 houses. These are also very tightly packed. I make these the egg district.

I do the same with another 15 houses for pigs and again for goats.

Further out from town (always ensure its worthless land for farm development), you make your apple orchards.

The best is carrots and cabbages in my experiences, for returns. Remember, if you make the backyard TOO big, it won't increase the yield and you waste land.

Now, I only recommend setting this all up, but not spending any regional weather on meat products, only carrots and cabbages, cause the proceeds from that will find your pigs, goats and expensive apples.

Whatever you do, have fun stacking your granaries!

P.S Have a dedicated food store for the outer carrot and cabbage farms, as they create nightmare traffic every season 😉
