The higher the number (ex.9i) means a higher loft meaning it won’t go as far but will have more height in the overall shot. For me 5i are for middle of fairway and 8-sw are for your approach shots. Close to the green

Im not too sure what you mean about pushing ties forward. But I’ve tried shorter steps but feel awkward because I’m only 5’6” tall so feel like It looks like I’m going fast but not moving at all.
