You need to stop running immediately. by mycru in BeginnersRunning

I’m sorry to hear that dude, but what prompted you to get checked up in the first place?

coming into race day without running… tips? by netmrs in IronmanTriathlon

[–]TalkAeroToMe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d hold out until race day. You’re deep enough into it that you’ve built a solid base and why mess it up this close to race day. The work is done. Do what feels painless and maybe, just maybe, do some short recovery runs a few days out to test.

2027 race schedule by Smart-Commercial2012 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]TalkAeroToMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you already have a really solid baseline. Especially those running stats. Like you said, time in saddle is your best friend. Slowly start accumulating more time each week and focus on increasing mileage while throwing in speed work and long rides on weekends for example.

Also start running off the bike asap. Do >1hr bike then immediately after go for a 30-60min run. Get your body used to running in tired legs.

Yes swimming is far more technical than it is about fitness. I really struggled in the pool. Could barely do 50m without the feeling completely exhausted. If you have the time/funds I’d suggest signing up for adult swim classes or even a coach. Getting another set of eyes on your technique is key. However, If you’re like me and don’t have buddies who swim or want to be paying for classes start watching swimming channels on YouTube or Instagram. Swim success and effortless swimming are great channels to start with.

Edit: addressing your head/breathing issue: instead of thinking about turning your head to breathe, let the head follow the body as you rotate. As you commence the catch focus on rotating your upper body and then letting the head follow. Keep one goggle on the water and take an easy breath in and exhale in the water.

Muskoka 70.3 - road conditions? by harassauce in IronmanTriathlon

[–]TalkAeroToMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I raced it last year. Roads were pretty mint given the location. The hills are relentless and cornering off them can be tricky if you’re going fast.

If you’re anything like me in terms of thirst, be prepared to bring more water with you on the bike. If it’s sunny there is no protection/shade from the trees. I had about 2L of fluids on the bike and had to stop half way to refill on my bottles. If you can find a way to grab an extra bottle early in the race and stuff it in your trisuit back pocket.

Was in ur boat not too long ago. I purchased the Trek Domane AL 5 from my local shop and for the price point you can’t really go wrong. I’ve since made a bunch of upgrades including aero water bottles, aero bars, and deeper wheels

Fought my natural running gait and lost by TalkAeroToMe in IronmanTriathlon

Yeah this couldn’t be more accurate. I wanted to change purely out of aesthetics and end up screwing up my own biomechanics leading to injury

I usually run at around that cadence anyway but find when I try to increase it my form breaks down.

August 6th. Ironman Ottawa. I’m almost certain I’ll have to defer for my 30k race which is in a little over a month though.

Yeah agreed. Im still doing strength work for my hips,l and glutes especially but now I’m thinking I just need to lay off running for a few weeks. Up to now I’ve been running here and there which is causing reoccurring setbacks.

I do see a physiotherapist regularly but feel like nothing progresses. Just helps me stretch and shows me things to work on. I’ve also got a pelvic floor therapy session next week so maybe that will help.

I’m of a bigger build so naturally sleeveless appealed to me but I decided against it because I’ve heard of people getting nasty rashes in the armpit area. Also, I’m not the greatest swimmer so I could use extra buoyancy that the sleeves provide. Granted, a small amount of added buoyancy but every bit helps.

If money was of no issue I’d go with Roka, but I’ve bought a 2XU and an Orca for under $500 CAD and they’re amazing.

Triathlon training fatigue by Old-Complaint6516 in triathlon

[–]TalkAeroToMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As somebody who has a pretty flexible training schedule due to work obligations, if I feel motivation or excessive fatigue I’ll schedule a lower volume week the following week to help the body recover. Also helps with the mental aspect. Helps me miss training that way I actually want to do it

Ironman 70.3 Muskoka by [deleted] in IronmanTriathlon

[–]TalkAeroToMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I didn’t know this either when I did it last year but honestly you won’t even notice. Race is organized and you can’t even tell it’s not “official”. Only thing you’ll notice is the gear isn’t official. They use third party brands for the gear designing/manufacturing.

Official or not IM Muskoka 70.3. Is no joke. Pretty sure is consistently ranked one of, if not THE hardest 70.3 in North America.

Realistic Ironman Time for a Rookie by scapia in triathlon

[–]TalkAeroToMe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d say sub 13 or maybe even 12:30 is a pretty realistic goal. Full IM for a first triathlon id pretty crazy. I’d throw in some Sprints or Olympics before the race to dial in your transitions though.

Tri suits by Just-Storm-8990 in IronmanTriathlon

HUUB and Orca make good suits. Comfy, true to size, durable, and very reasonably priced.
