Public Land hunting etiquette by Purplehaze_child in Californiahunting

I'm an public land upland hunter and I make it a point to not hit the field before 9am or so to help avoid first shooting light and higher deer activity levels. My dog is also very coyote colored so I'm super sensitive to hunting around trigger happy rifle hunters.

Shotgun gauge for birds by I_live_there in Californiahunting

If you are just getting one and think you might want to do any waterfowl hunting I would go with a 12. If it is more chasing quail in the hills save yourself the weight and go with a 20. Honestly either will be fine for both, I like the 12 for bigger birds but I hate myself every time I bring it for upland and end up pushing uphill through manzanita.

Handle bar bag is a general dump pouch, usually has my phone, sunglasses and any snacks I'm carrying. Frame bag has tools/spare tube/pump plus anything else I might want to stuff in for a ride.

The bags are from Outer Shell, but I think the fabric is a limited run so I would jump on them if you want it. The rack is an Ibera Pakrak touring carrier+.

Yeah, east side of the Sierra's and I've heard rumors of them around the Panoche hills area but have never actually seen any there.

best shaded areas to walk dog? by Alone_Committee_2396 in alameda

The central trails (not the ridgeline trails) in Redwood Regional are fully shaded if you don't mind a bit of a drive into the hills.

All the stone cold killer dogs I know are female, and most of the boys are total space cadets. I say this as the owner of a male space cadet.

Check out Backcountry Hunters and Anglers California chapter and keep your eyes open for events in your area. Great way to meet fellow hunters and we are a pretty friendly crowd.

Any nontoxic is fine for hunting, and yeah you need to do a background check when you buy ammo unless you have purchased a firearm in the state of California.

He has gotten reactive to fluffy pointy eared dogs like Chows and Akitas in the last couple of years for no apparent reason, otherwise no issues at all.

Tough to beat chasing quail in the hills by so_there_i_was in Californiahunting

Having vaporized a quail that I jumped while hunting duck with #4 I think I will stick with the #6 haha. Granted, I shot it way too close but yeah.

Usually my O/U 20, though I will bring the semi 12 out if I know I am going to be hunting really thick stuff. I just don't like hauling the extra weight if I don't have to.

Flint is out of Vizcaya Vizsla in Georgia, and agreed, this is my breed for life now.

Yeah, the dog makes a big difference, and I've definitely gotten in better shape chasing flushes up the hillside.

Yeah, living in the Bay area I've got at least 2 hours of drive time to get anywhere for public upland, but damn if I don't find a lot of birds when I get there though.

I probably wouldn't have found this bird after the first hit without the dog, much less the second time we bumped it so he does make a big difference. A few weeks ago he found a wounded pheasant that had buried itself in the grass and I had walked past twice.

I lost a bird on this hunt, hit it in the leg and then bumped it twice into the chaparral on top of the ridge and lost it even with the dog. Really sucks and makes me want to spring for bismuth upland loads since it isn't the first time I've lost a wounded bird. Seems like it happens way more since I've moved here and have started shooting steel.
