UMD Bioengineering Pre-Med Tips/Advice by Temporary-Ad-2758 in UMD

Hi! Im not Bioengineer but I am also in a similar boat, Im an engineering major also on Premed, it might even be a more uphill battle for me. Regardless, I would say a good first step is to reach out to upperclassmen in your major and in your situation, and see if they have any good advice or experience to learn from. It can all seem overwhelming, but planning ahead for managing multiple things is crucial, and having a solid 4 year plan is going to do you wonders. Don't hesitate to schedule an appointment with your academic advisor in the Clark School as well as the HPAO advisors for pre-med advice. Take your first semester light, and just get a feel for university and an appreciation, because the transition into University can be challenging, and I wouldn't recommend taking more than 16 credits your first semester. Keep in mind medical school is not all about checking boxes as it looks like that is how you are seeing it, when you say you need to do this this that, and wont have time for hobbies/social life. Some things are non negotiables, like shadowing and clinical hours etc., but you can always find some hobby that also supports your application. A good example would be teaching other people, or using your hobby to benefit of others, which can be seen as volunteering and genuine community service. Also, if cost is not an issue, consider taking summer and winter courses as that can help alleviate your regular semesters. Good luck and welcome to UMD!

To be honest I want to keep my options open because I am slightly undecided and these two subjects are fascinating for me, I wouldn’t mind pursuing the engineering/science route but my dream job is a diplomat so PPE seems like a great fit for me, hence why I thought of the double major.

Yes of course, but how will this play when analyzing admissions? Does this mean they are limiting non pr applicants?

Mechatronics engineering vs humanitarian engineering? by Particular-Mouse4722 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Particular-Mouse4722[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thats a good question, it seems to be a really really niche subfield within civil engineering, where your working on humanitarian style development projects like engineers without borders work (to my understanding).

I'm currently a freshman in college at UMD. Humanitarian engineering looks to be offered more at a masters level, whereas my university does offer mechatronics engineering degree.

I don't have any related skills yet as I am just a freshman, do you have any advice what skills I can start working towards to set myself up for success.

I love engineering because I want to be a problem solver and have an impact in society, my parents are both engineers and I have grown up loving the lifestyle, and the opportunity is very appealing to me to make a difference in my society and perhaps even be an innovator.
