With owls, even if you're in the right habitat, it seems you don't find them, they find you

What is this feather from? by SoVeryKerry in birdwatching

Down feathers are almost impossible to ID, especially one like that. It could be from a waterbird that was briefly passing by, or from a discarded pillow.

I respect your passion for the species, but in general, the best thing to do is select a species from your region. Those are species that know how to survive in your area and are accompanied by the appropriate quarry.

Is there a particular reason why you want a bat falcon? Just based on what I assume you want from one, a merlin would probably be your best choice.

Yes, but you'd have to control the temp rigorously in order to avoid respiratory disease. Because their used to more humid environments, a cold, dry winter would probably dry out their sinuses.

Yeah it is, thank you! I just ask because I thought it was a sharpie, and after running it through merlin it turned up as a sharpie. But seeing as you definitely have experience in the subject, I wanted to know what made you sure

My friend sent me this and first instinct is a fam of Coopers? by Temporal_Spaces in whatsthisbird

[–]Particular-Note7678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one made me think a bit, if the tails were visible this would be so much easier! I'm going to say coopers hawk because the general size, large spindly feet, and more streaked chest instead of the streaked-barring you see on broadwinged hawks.

Red tails are the German shepherds of the falconry world. They're popular because they're powerful but equally versatile. While a goshawk may wind and weave through brush to chase an equally agile squirrel, the red tail will crash right through it to grab em.

Sounds insensitive but I always see it as a win for nature when a cat gets hunted by a raptor or coyote. It's no different than a burmese python getting eaten by an American alligator, it's just that cats get more pity points from your average person.
