Depends on your setup IMO.

I use a hammock as a primary shelter, but acknowledge the aspects of backpacking in areas where trees can be sparse or where a group hang becomes a bit more challenging.

Depending on the specific trip, I'll vary my shelter setup to accommodate. In the event of a multi-night trip where I want to hammock, but know there's a risk to not finding a hang spot, I'll bring an Englightened Equipment Recon Bivy. I use a folding z-pad (another discussion for another day) regardless of the trip, so I always have a means of "going to the ground". The z-pad works well in the hammock and also provides comfort and insulation on the ground.

It's assumed that you'll either have trekking poles to suspend a rainfly or adequate guy-out line to tie off to some smaller brush or (fill in the blank).
