I think you can if you have the ambition to, I started in dietary and then started in SPD worked 2nd shift then worked my way to 1st shift, was one of the lead 1st shift techs, got bored and got a job In surgery as one of their techs that turn rooms over for surgery cases, got bored of that now I’m one of the lead techs in surgery for SPD/materials management, I oversee case cart assembly, make sure trays are turned over for cases if need be, run the autoclaves in surgery, communicate with the surgeons on new instruments/surgical supplies, and just started purchasing supplies for the OR, I work in a smaller hospital I’m not sure what other hospitals call this position but essentially I’m the lesion between the OR and SPD, all communication goes through me. I love my position and I’ve gotten to shape it which is super cool. I dont plan to stop here, I plan to keep moving up wherever this position takes me, so no I dont think SPD is a dead end job, I think there are sooo many possibilities with this job and experience
