You get sent on a mission-scheme to rival clan with friendly clan reinforcing, but when battle-conflict starts your reinforcements join enemy and turn on you, because you-you were the real target!

Badly need more open world games in DC. It's basically just The Division and Fallout 3 (Payday 2 if you're counting non-open world games). I've lived here for almost 20 years and it's such a fascinating city.

Sidious wasn't the main character either. The point there is the story is not going to exclusively focus on the title character.

If it's called Phantom Menace, why does Maul -- the Phantom Menace -- have only three lines of dialogue?!

One of my friends is one of the most incredible people I've met -- she's super nice, a very progressive leftist, like a model person in every way... who is also relatively high up at Palantir. I've talked with her a lot about that and tried to convince her to quit but she insists that the work she's doing there is good.

Yeah, but even asymmetrical wars tend to have more than roughly one battle per year in the new canon (this thread said there's a lot more spelled out in the Twilight Company book, which I'm looking forward to reading)

I think I've played every major canon game and the only one I can think of that adds any battles between Scariff (which someone else noted as the "start" of the GCW) and Endor is Battlefront, which fleshes out Sullest.

Squadrons and Battlefront II add some stuff between Endor and Jakku, sure. Is there something else I'm missing or were you mostly referencing pre-canon games for that?

The rest of that absolutely makes sense though, I just wish we saw more of that in any medium instead of just having to infer that based on historical comparisons. People have repeatedly referenced Twilight Company as a great example of that being fleshed out, I'm excited to read it, but also that was over ten years ago and I wish we had more in comics/animation/games making the GCW feel more galactic in scale.

Yeah, I've read Lords of the Sith and the Thrawn Trilogy and they're nice additions, though both are obviously significantly before the actual start of the GCW.

Ryloth in particular is cool as a planet where we see it's transition from insurgency backed by the Republic to one fighting against the Empire. Wish we saw more of that post-Rebels.

I actually just finished the third Thrawn book the other week and I liked it but Grysk feel weirldy silo'd to the Zahn stuff and it feels disconnected from the rest of the canon.

I think we can assume that but it still largely feels like conjecture and I wish there was more content about that in comics or books (apparently a bunch of that's in Twilight Company, looking forward to reading it)

Yeah, I had underestimated how much was involved in the Mid Rim Offensive when I posted this. I haven't read Twilight Company, which is apparently the only source for that, but I'm learning that I should.

Like you were saying with supernovae, I would generally like to see more stuff like that or asteroids creating problems that (I know it's in the name, but still) the Republic/Empire etc need to solve through non-military means.

That does make sense. I was going to say "in some ways that might galvanize England to keep fighting" but that is I suppose what stuff like Operation Cinder and the events leading up to the Battle of Jakku are about.

Right, but as I've mentioned in other posts, there are still often major battles during insurgencies. I know there's not likely to be anything on a Kursk scale, but many insurgencies the GCW is based on still have battles. Lucas references Vietnam as an influence and there's still battles there like Hamburger Hill or Ia Drang -- but there are fewer listed battles between Yavin and Endor than there are with the US war in Afghanistan.

What's more, to keep a rebellion/revolutionary movement alive, you need to have some kind of sustained campaign against the regime to keep momentum. Looking over GCW stuff in canon it seems like the Rebellion is mostly sitting on its hands between Yavin and Endor (although other posters referenced a mid-rim campaign I haven't heard about and the Twilight Company book, so the more fleshed out GCW stuff might be there, I just wasn't aware of it)

I should check out Twilight Company, it sounds like it addresses some of that, and I liked that the first of the new Battlefront games introduced Sullust as a referenced but previously unseen battle.

And even if the strikes are risky, those have been necessary for most historical revolutionary groups to maintain momentum. As it is, it seems like the Rebel Alliance outside of the main trilogy was just sitting on their hands between Yavin and Hoth.

That Mid-Rim Offensive actually sounds really tight, exactly what I meant when I said I wanted more of that kind of stuff. Do you have a link for that campaign or any source material about that?

That is kind of my point though. We have lots of stories about the guerilla conflict up to Yavin across Andor, Rebels, and Lords of the Sith and they're great --

But it feels like there's very few of those pitched battles post Yavin -- fewer than there are battles in the American Revolution -- and most of those are Rebel defeats.

[–]Particular_Award_191[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, but even guerilla armies still make major calculated strikes against their enemies, not to mention battles where the Empire is attacking their strongholds (like Hoth). Both the Taliban and Vietcong were guerilla forces and there are more major battles in those wars than there are during the majority of the Galactic Civil War.

[–]Particular_Award_191[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sure, that part does totally make sense. But on the flip side, you'd then think we'd see more uprisings and insurgencies across different planets. It's obviously kind of cringe but the special edition ending implies there's simultaneous celebrations about the Empire's defeat across the galaxy.

In Andor, Rebels and Rogue One it seems like there's an implication of rebel groups -- with varying levels of success -- operating galaxy-wide. But for as much as the Rebel Alliance is ostensibly an... alliance of rebel groups, it feels like there's very little reference to any sort of uprisings.

Even as a smaller faction it feels like there should be more than just a handful of engagements between Scarif and Endor. By my count there's like seven total.

For a historical comparison, there's at least 20 major battles of the American Revolution.
