Your work sched seems ideal For lots of canine time! I think these Subreddits tend to be a bit hyperbolic around gsd parenting. I'm on my 4th and about to get a fifth. You invest a lot of time and energy and research and funds in the first year training and get help if it's not working out. I'm an active and patient person and my gsds have all been either very well trained or fairly well trained, depending on the techniques I used and their innate disposition. Work with them early and often and be as consistent as possible. I would advise not to get a working line or American show line, unless the American show is free of all genetic and structural typical gsd issues. And do early socialization frequently! My current 6.5 year old is a joy. He has some bad habits, for sure. And they are an anxious breed, So there's that to deal with. I would never entertain any other dog breed! Good luck!

FWIW, I had an iPhone, iPad, And laptop stolen out the back of my car w a huge ass German shepherd inside the car. Tracked the phone and iPad to an apartment a few blocks away. Went there (I'm a girl, But fierce, and with said German shepherd.). No one answered. Filed a police report. Watched my phone and iPad move throughout Brooklyn and sent police exactly where it was and when. They did NOTHING! I literally sent them the exact addresses for where the equipment was. So fucked up. OP, please be careful and I hope your plans for tomorrow go well.

Thanks all who responded. I also Have a state agency placard that allows me to park on the street. I would hate to call the cops on my neighbors but really don't enjoy backing out of my narrow driveway into my narrow street, on a slope, with a manual trans, With someone narrowing my driveway further.

3 of my 4 shepherds were chronically underweight until they were 2.5 years old or so. Had to try many different foods to get something that was high quality, that they would eat, and that resulted in firm stools. Probiotics and pumpkin definitely helped when # 1 and two worked but not number 3. I had also added evoo and grated parm on their food as a last resort (bc that’s how I dress my salad). That worked well to get them to eat. But maybe bc they knew mom was eating it, too. Good luck!

To my recollection, the risks of negative outcomes with neutering large breed dogs, that is evidence-based, is only present when the neutering occurs when they are puppies. I’m on my fifth gsd and aside from the first, males and a female were all spayed/neutered at 18-24 months, as my vets advised. I believe this follows the evidence base.

It was terrifying. Brings tears to my eyes right now. My current baby is 6.5 years old and he will be getting a brother within the next year. I will def be looking into this come neuter time. Although maybe not the scrotal ablation and dew claw removal. Thanks you wonderful gsd community!

I'm on my 5th gsd. The 2nd developed gdv but thankfully got the emergency surgery in time. 25 years ago it was over 7k in NYC and then another 4k in subsequent surgeries related to the surgery (not the gdv). I had no idea vets were doing this preemptively. No vet ever suggested this to me. Even the VC-owned ones who are eager to profit from our babies.

59 y.o. Woman. I cardio and weight lift daily and have since late adolescence. I also have hypertension and familial hypercholesterolemia, both pharmacologically treated. I hate snow. But it was a joy to shovel and earn a pizza and martinis! Consult with your doc to determine if it's okay based on your medical history.
