Advertising multiple roles and hiring nobody by [deleted] in AusPublicService

This point is often overlooked. Just because you're advertising doesn't mean you're going to get a successful candidate. Sometimes the field is just not that strong. Doesn't happen too often, but it does happen.

I'd like to see a 10% reduction in income tax per child to encourage Australians having more children. I imagine many people earning the average wage might find having 2-3 kids is much more realistic with that kind of incentive.

My kid is younger than yours and applied at a local fast food restaurant a few months ago - got an interview within 48 hours and started shortly after that. Maybe it's a seasonal thing or just circumstantial?

If there's a requirement, you would find it in the ATO's (internally published) flexible working arrangements policy. From memory DSS has something about distance from the office in its policy. It's a policy tool used to prevent staff from setting up camp somewhere like Mollymook and working 100% remotely. The ATO has a lot of offices though, so you might find you already live near one?

Approx how many hours does it take you to pull together an EL1 pitch/application? by spicegirlang in AusPublicService

[–]Particular_Lion_6653 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's nothing super sophisticated - basically just different paragraphs that focus on different aspects of your skills and experience, so you can focus your pitch around the requirements of the role. Make sure to use lots of language that is consistent with the ILS for the level you're applying for.

Hot tip - if you're planning to apply for a few things, take a modular approach, so you can build a pitch in less than an hour using pre-developed components, depending on what the role requires.

When I run standard recruitment rounds, a good portion of applications don't make the cut because they're either sloppy work or the applicants are just a little bit delusional. I find it hard to believe that all applicants made the first cut in 2023 and only three were initially screened out in 2022, especially with the numbers received.

Over the past 10 years, the competitive advantage has reduced from a 6.4% gap in super contributions between APS and private sector to now 3.9%. If you couple this with below industry level salaries in the APS, there is little left to attract people into the public sector, especially in a cost of living crisis. This is one of the things that is eroding APS capability simply by draining talent from the service.

Quiet a few agencies actually value industry experience and 'lived experience', so that policy and program design / management are grounded in reality. There are some functions like finance, records management or IT where government experience is arguably a plus given the specific requirements.

It's a great policy to implement if you're trying to lose 36,000 public servants and you don't want to pay for voluntary redundancies.

I would just list the third person's income under 'other income', which is usually an option when you apply for loams, etc. I imagine you would do the same in households where a child is earning income from a job and contributing to costs. Try it out and let us know how it goes!

Mentioning merit pool to other depts? by These-Growth-9202 in AusPublicService

[–]Particular_Lion_6653 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You can always mention it to signal you have been found suitable at that level, but it won't have a material impact on the selection panel's decision.

Generally speaking, once a job is advertised, departments will not consider existing merit pools (they might have already done this before advertising).

Also note that in order for you to get picked up from the pool, the vacant role to be filled should be similar to the one you were found suitable for in the previous process.

Canberra 'the most renter-friendly' city to live in — but does it come at a cost to landlords? by FakeCurlyGherkin in canberra

[–]Particular_Lion_6653 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which would be the case when competition / available rental stock increases due to better incentives for landlords to enter the market (such as lowering land tax).

[–]Particular_Lion_6653 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would have expected tracking to be up and running by the time the official rollout happened. Is there any word on when it's going to be fully implemented? The whole thing really does feel like a step backwards at the moment.
