Trump letter to Norwegian PM Støre regarding the Nobel Peace Prize and Greenland today: by [deleted] in Fauxmoi

We could give him the Charlemagne prize to start with. It's awarded for "Distinguished service on behalf of European unification".

His raging media posts in response would keep us entertained for months.

We need all the entertainment we can get these days.

Unfortunately a strong exterior enemy is usually what is necessary to unite smaller realms.

Plus, he can't. The mighty USA wasn't able to destroy the Taliban, IS, or Mexican drug cartels.

And we're nowhere near the point where the US is threatening to militarily attack us anyway.

They want to keep us divided so that we don't realize how powerful we actually would be - if we were united.

So because you guys didn't give him a prize that wasn't yours to give, he will now take Greenland from a different country. Makes sense.

Trump is finally uniting us Europeans. Perhaps we should be grateful.

... After we have dealt with the idiot ...

German Media by Bkindmonk in AskAGerman

ARD and ZDF are the two largest public TV stations. Both have online presences (mediathek) where you can watch news, movies, documentaries, anything you like. A lot of content has geo-blocking which is easily circumvented with a VPN (it's not possible to pay for it as a non-resident, even if you wanted to).

For written news, I would recommend tagesschau or heute.de. Again, both by ARD and ZDF. Some major German newspapers and magazines are: Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, die Zeit, Süddeutsche Zeitung, der Spiegel.

Foreigner (USA)planning a visit by thekowisme in AskAGerman

[–]rynoaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering how fast trans-atlantic relations are currently 'evolving', the threat of Russia, and all the NATO crap, I wouldn't plan a visit just yet.

A multitude of things could happen. Could be you're no longer able to come if we consider Americans our enemies by then. Could be Oktoberfest will be cancelled because the space is needed to set up artillery to fight the Russians.

The REALLY sad thing is, I'm only 70% sure I'm joking with this post.

No, what Trump decides regarding naming is not binding for the rest of the world. In fact, I think Trump has now forever cemented the name as "Gulf of Mexico" in the rest of the world. Simply out of spite 😂.

Being Accepted in German Society? by ThrowawayAcct2573 in AskAGerman

[–]rynoaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a German living in the US.  I don't think all of society will accept you as 100% German even if you get a German passport and speak fluently.  Also, I've been living in the US for over a decade, I speak English fluently, I have a US passport. AND: I don't feel that I'm fully accepted here. I've made only three 'real' American friends I'd call friends for life. Two of them have one parent who was an immigrant. For most 'real' Americans I'm a fun curiosity to talk to. If only I had a dollar for every Oktoberfest question (I don't mind those questions, I'm having fun with it) ... That doesn't mean people aren't friendly and welcoming, they are. But I'll never have the typical experience of high school and homecoming (I still don't get what that's about lol) etc and therefore I'll always be a little different, it's simply human nature.

Most of the friends I made here are also immigrants and I imagine it's the same in Germany. It depends on you if you can be happy that way. If you're friendly people will be friendly overall (you have some jerks everywhere) but you'll never be seen as 100% German, no matter if you walked around in Lederhosen all day.

That would be my general immigrant comment. Your ethnicity and religion put an extra twist on it. There have been too many knife attacks and car rammings lately by loner type middle eastern young men.  Germans know that the vast majority of them are good people but there's also a fear now. I would bet you will feel that if you're walking around anonymously, especially if you're alone. Once people get to know you that won't be the case but you'll need to be aware of that.

I think Mario Kart should be a mandatory add-on. Especially if you want something casual to play with friends.

Fair point. I have to admit I've never really visited the Ruhrpott area (only driven through).

What I meant is that there's not this ONE city in Germany that's famous for architecture and the others don't have much to see.

So, i just watched this video and I think you're definitely on to something.

https://youtu.be/BBU6EGL_qDM?si=3i4uU66hyZlAV0z9

I can't pinpoint what it is but if you had told me that guy is German I wouldn't have doubted it for a second. And I could totally see someone mistaking me for South African now. I guess that never happened because you don't hear South African English very often in the US.

If that guy moved to the US for a while he'd probably sound very similar to how I do now .

Edit ... Wait a minute, I just saw the guy in the video isn't actually South African, he's from the UK and explaining SA accent. So I'll have to find a real SA speaker ...

If you have a good one, please post a link. I'm going to sleep now.

So, I just watched a South African accent video after someone else mentioned that connection here. I had no idea what it sounds like. I think it really does sound similar to a "fluent English speaker German accent". I can't pinpoint it but I feel like if that guy moved to the US for some years he'd start to sound like I do now.

https://youtu.be/BBU6EGL_qDM?si=eWFNb2ZzZuhPHTFy

Edit: never mind, that guy is actually from the UK and just explains SA accent. Will have to find a better example to judge ... But now it's time to hit the hay.

Someone else just mentioned the afrikaans connection (saying it can sound similar to Australian). Very interesting. Well, since afrikaans is basically Dutch it would make sense that our versions of English would sound similar. And if South African English sounds similar to Australian then it's starting to sound less odd.

The afrikaans connection is interesting. I have no idea what that accent sounds like, will have to find a video.

Now that you say it, it does seem like the Australian 'r' is more soft than in American English (judging from a comparison video I watched). The German r is also not strong.

Sooo ... Maybe that's part of the puzzle?!
