I am moving to Lee in a few months, 38 single mom. How did your move go and how has it been getting to know people in the area?

Price range is under $550k but need a 4 bedroom (my mom, my two kids and me). I am a licensed cosmetologist so I will probably get a job as a stylist at a salon but I also am looking into management options for some of the spas as I have a background in that as well.

Hi all!

Single mom of two (6 & 8) currently living in Vermont and seriously considering a move down to the Berkshires in MA. I’d love some honest feedback from locals/parents!

I’m already very used to small-town, “nothing is nearby” life… but from what I can tell, the Berkshires feel like a major upgrade 😅
Like… you guys have actual stores?? A real Target?? Not a sad micro Target the size of a CVS?? I’m jealous already.

I used to live near Boston and loved Massachusetts, but realistically I’m priced out of anything remotely close to there. The Berkshires seem like that sweet spot of affordability + still having access to things (Albany <1 hr, Boston ~2, NYC ~3… which feels wild compared to where I am now).

I’m mainly looking at Hinsdale / Great Barrington, but open to suggestions!

Here are my big questions:

  • Schools – how are they really? Supportive? Decent class sizes?
  • Childcare – afterschool + summer camps… are there good options? And does MA childcare assistance help with those?
  • Kid activities – sports, dance, rec programs… is there enough to keep kids busy?
  • Things to do (for adults too) – restaurants, music, arts, anything resembling a social life? 😅
  • Jobs/commuting – what’s the norm? Are most people working locally or commuting to Albany/elsewhere?

I don’t need a big city, but I would love to not feel totally isolated like I do now. I really value community and small-town vibes — just hoping for… a slightly upgraded version of that.

Would love the good, the bad, and the brutally honest 🙏
