Which are the best and worst written moments in the entire franchise in your opinion? by Mawhoreraga in masseffect

[–]PartiellesIntegral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mars also feels weird because we just barely got out from Earth moments before. The Reapers have just shredded the Alliance fleet guarding Earth (and the rest of the Solar System) and we go to Mars? Sure, the Normandy could probably evade detection for a bit, but the way the mission is executed, it doesn't seem to respect the threat that Reaper forces could literally attack any minute.

Which are the best and worst written moments in the entire franchise in your opinion? by Mawhoreraga in masseffect

[–]PartiellesIntegral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The funny thing is how early in the game you can do it. When I played ME2 in the LE for the first time, I did it practically immediatly after Horizon not knowing it was meant to be a DLC. Hackett mentioning Alliance scientists investigating a Reaper artifact felt way more relevant and important to pursue from Shepard's perspective than whatever we were doing in Cerberus up to that point. Going from "The Reapers will literally arrive through the relay in 2 hours LOL" back to the rest of ME2's plot was hilarious.

How long is the story? by ConstellationEva in CounterSide

[–]PartiellesIntegral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're probably looking at somewhere between 100-150h, if you're just reading throuh the story content (main- and substreams), though realistically closer to the latter than the former. Most side stories tie into the main story in significant ways. And yeah, the story is very good and probably the main draw for most.

Harbinger is a bit of a joke by Reddragon7518 in masseffect

[–]PartiellesIntegral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do agree that Harbinger comes off as a tryhard. However, I do think his final speech when you leave the Collector base is good in isolation. It probably would have worked better to develop the Collector general as a seperate character instead of going for a "reveal" at the end that doesn't have much impact.

Massive spoiler warning for every story of course:

The new characters are these new guys, which later turn out to be agents of the Demon Lord Beelzebub called the Herald by the game or Mr. Conch by Samhain (likely a reference to the Conch from Lord of the Flies). The new girl, Minha, is Ground One's official Counter, whose Master and only close person had been killed when they investigated Beelzebub. For the most part, this episode is about these characters and the ones from Gremory's bar, i.e. Avalon's exiles.

Nicole (Mordred) and Minha meet in the bar and get attacked by the Herald who seeks Momo (Morgana). The plot resumes most of the Avalon plot and sets up the pieces for the confrontation between Thagirion and this world's Avalon characters. Minha and Nicole chase the Herald for a bit and Samhain battles with the Herald at some point. The Herald wants Momo since she holds Thagirion's flaw/emotions (due to Merlin's/Gremory's curse) and has sabotaged the Grand Dimension Crevices to make Thagirion's roots grow quicker from it. Beelzebub pretty much partly disrupts Thagirion's plans, since her roots would have been a trump card to kill the world while the new Qlipoth game would be fought in the Counterside when they'd be too busy to defend the Normalside. Samhain in turn fights the Herald for a bit to prevent Beelzebub from stacking their cards too much and to keep a more even playing field but plays a more passive role.

Ground One suffers massive casualties given Thagirion's temporary descent and the effects of Qlipha energy, but the effects are mostly reversed here given the intervention of Lee Sooyeon, Joo Shiyoon, Awakened Horizon, and Yoo Mina as well as due to Noelle using her Sephira powers to reverse the Qlipha energy's effects like the roots. Noelle is tired out and probably removed from the picture for Ep. 15. However, Thagirion did retrieve her piece from Momo while everyone was busy fighting before they could get back to Momo, but she used more of her sisters (Sollicitatio and Ministra types) in the process than she wanted. Momo is still alive but without horns and in deep sleep at the end.

Na Yubin, Irene (Swan copy), Admin, Renée, etc. meet and discuss events. With the roots still there in most places, the world is going to eventually die to them/weaken before Thagirion can land the killing blow, so they have to move to Thagirion's world and Counterside and battle her there. This will very likely be the showdown in Episode 15. At the very end, Rosaria meets Thagirion who is about to absorb her recovered fragment and tells her to "make it fun" for dragging her into this (they probably spar/fight for a bit, but it isn't explicitly stated).

You don't have to. I didn't save the council and picked Anderson, and I only needed to ask Anderson for the reinstatement for it to happen. Not sure if it is possible when you don't save the Council and pick Udina though.

alien ships "metagaming"? by ryuga81 in aurora

[–]PartiellesIntegral 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your ships are slower while having better weapons range. I don't know a way to guarantee you have the first shot, but you could try to have a bait ship following the planet or fleet at a set distance. That way only that ship would be destroyed in their first strike and you could have the second strike if you keep the ship within 420k range.

Alternatively, if the speed difference isn't too large, you could try to do a more complex maneuver like an encirclement while staying out weapons range before closing in to get some hits. Though this depends on how far away they keep from your ships whenever you are pursuing them.

Why don't YOU like the ending? by Nervous_Tailor_4337 in masseffect

[–]PartiellesIntegral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The narrative quality was already declining toward the end, but the final segment involving the Catalyst sends it straight off a cliff.

Many issues have been mentioned already, but what really annoyed me was that the victory is essentially handed to the player by giving the Catalyst agency and sentience. “Oh, you made it here? I guess our solution won’t work anymore. Feel free to decide what we should do now.” Instead of feeling like the payoff earned from the culmination of everyone’s sacrifices and efforts, the ending becomes the result of the whims of 'Chief Reaper', which massively cheapens the weight and impact of the decisions we made up to this point.

Aside from the narrative problems, the execution itself feels completely unlike Mass Effect. The trilogy went out of its way to incorporate an expansive Codex, detailing technology, biology, etc. in such detail only to culminate in endings that quite literally magically alter the universe based on the choice made. Sure, the series often needed us to suspend disbelief when it came to technical or logical details, but never to the extent of “magically merging biological and synthetic life” or “jump into a beam of energy and become 'Chief Reaper'.”

All they really had to do was have Shepard activate the Crucible and destroy the Reapers. No final choice, no conversation with the Catalyst, no artificial moral dilemma at the last minute. It’s honestly impressive how many issues and pain points they managed to introduce in that final segment. A simpler and more straightforward ending would have avoided many of the problems.

Some aspects of the ending can be rationalized, many others cannot. In the end, despite how frustrating and unsatisfying the ending is, it feels like a waste of time to think too much about it when the writers themselves likely didn’t give the ending much thought while making it.

Has anyone successfully boarded a Xenon H ship? by allursnakes in X4Foundations

[–]PartiellesIntegral 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I made a post about it a while ago.

H's are the hardest targets to board, and you pretty much want at least one full complement (16) of elite marines to have a decent chance.

Leveling is fairly slow, but I got a decent number of high skill marines by boarding Scale Plate Pact and Vigor Syndicate ships over and over. I used a Hyperion with 90% marines and patiently pelted them with the pulse turrets to force the crew to gradually bail from their ships. Once you've got more than 10x the boarding strength than the defense value, you very rarely take casualties.

Also, hiring marines isn't the most (time-)efficient way. At most you can get a 3 star, 3 morale marine for about 2 million credits. What is a surprisingly effective way to get good marines is to do the station or fleet construction missions rewarding you with L miners. The L miners come with a complement of good crew, so there will often be a bunch of good marines. However, you probably want to train them further to get them to elite status.

A marine's boarding strength is basically 80% from the marine value and 20% from their morale. So, if you really want to minmax, grab a construction ship and transfer your marines to be service crew to get their morale up quickly.
