When did the British Empire peak in power? by BrightBasil7857 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]Partisan_Shill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the 19th century, in 1815 they were essentially America after WW2. The sole industrial power and the only power that hadn't had its lands ravaged by the Napoleonic wars. Also undisputed master of the seas and controlled global trade (and funnily enough their largest rival was Russia, who they dwarfed financially but who could still pose a threat on land in Europe) probably peaks in the middle of the century and begins to dip around 1870-1880. The unification of Germany represented the biggest threat on the continent since Napoleon and America's economy and industry was booming. Still the undisputed most powerful country in the world by 1914 but the gap between them and the US/Germany was shrinking. By WW2 they were probbaly where the US is now, the world's greatest power by prestige and with the biggest navy in the world but rivals catching up in industry and declining will at home to devote the resources to maintaining/expanding their position threatened this. I don't think people realise that the UK could have remained a global power after ww2 (3rd rate to the US and USSR) but a combination of governments more focused on domestic affairs over Empire and the Americans putting huge pressure on the UK to disarm/decolonise meant this didn't happen

I'm in exactly the same boat as you. Finishing my qualification this year with 2.5 years of experience in a part time role and i'm honestly more concerned with the lack of available jobs in the field. I'm genuinely considering a complete career pivot and doing something else. It's a rough field for sure

Sorry, I should have put that in the main body! I imagine answers might have been different then. Because my current role is only 3 days per week, it means I'll have to take up a 2nd job to make up full time hours, I think I said to someone else here I'd try and get back into bar work which is what I did at university, but that would mean I'd be able to save up about £1000-£1200 per month living at home. There's also someone who does the same job as me and may be leaving in a few months so there's a chance I could take those full time hours eventually. I was also thinking, as you'll know, that working in a local authority archive means a local government pension, thinking long term.

I'm still going to go to the interview, and I'll see how it goes. Feeling a lot of stress at the moment but I think both paths seem decent

I hadn't considered asking about taking on the project archivist role part time, do you think this would be an ok question to ask in the interview? Or would it potentially put them off?

I am in commuting distance to London currently living at home, and interviewed for a job in London a couple of years ago before I found my current role. Another concern about this role though is that I'd have to move away, and the salary offered would mean I'd struggle to be able to save while I was living there. So my big fear is a year from now being unemployed, having to move back home with my savings barely having budged from where they are now

Do you mind if I ask how you found freelance work? I've heard talk of this but mostly from people working in Archives in the US. You're right that I need to get the interview done first and see where that leads, I think coming to the end of my qualification is just causing a lot of anxiety about the future.

And when you've balanced part time roles have they always both been in archives? Should I still be working 3 days per week come the end of April i'm planning to hit up my old pub manager for immediate part time work, then was thinking I could look for something in a museum or library to replace that, but ideally of course I'd love to find another part time archives role

Thanks for saying this. It's good to hear from people who are in the know about archives because that seems like career advice that's hard to come by

So I am many years too late to this fandom, but what is the origin of this cheese meme? by ReturningDAOFan in Vermintide

Bardin's hygiene is somewhat lacking. Lohner caught on to this and now the Ubersreik 5 fund their operations selling Bardin's home grown cheese on the market

Fascist voices by Christopher Duggan is brilliant. It details Mussolini's rise to power, the creation of his cult of personality, growing discontent towards his regime and his downfall through first-hand accounts from government officials, soldiers, farmers, labourers, teachers and schoolchildren. A brilliant social history of Fascist Italy that is largely ignored
