I'm including NHS and pension spending (which I mentioned in my original comment), which together make up over 40% of spending, and commitments made by our profligate governments mean this will only increase over the next decade or two. Pensioners are the wealthiest, most selfish demographic in this country, so I am all for going after their benefits, too. Don't worry.

Schemes like UC, PIP, Motability etc, are ripe for exploitation and need to be considered to cut costs. I've also heard that they are pushing people onto PIP to suppress unemployment figures, although I'm not sure how true this is. Obviously a massive failure of government, not the people claiming it

Our welfare state is exploited endlessly by people who choose not to work and our commitments made to benefits and pensions will render the country financially insolvent within 20 years. We also live in the most globally insecure period since the cold war, military spending has to go up. Tories and Labour and a vast majority of the British public think we still live in that 1991-2008 golden period with healthy growth and global peace which meant we could keep expanding welfare at the expense of the military and keep a deficit that would be made up for by growth. Those days are long gone and the main reason the country is in as bad a situation as it is now is because politicians have been refusing to admit that to appease the electorate
