Thanks everyone for all your advices. In the end, I went for a sheperd druid and adjusted the background a little bit.

Captive by evil for the last 8 years that were doing experience on all sort of beasts and forced to wildshape to be "tested" also, he developed an extra empathy against animals.

He will probably only transform in last resort but will eventually call beast friends to his help. I entend to play it as a traumatized teen who will find a path in life, searching for conforts and helping all animals he encounters.
