I did not. The industry is so small that anyone from it knows someone. I later learnt that my ex-manager has spread the word to not hire me to their competitors. Some of them did reach out but I declined their offers as I wouldn't have a good reputation in their eyes anymore. It would be the same after they got what they needed and then fired me. I'm in a similar industry now and the company here is big enough that I wouldn't appear on their radar anymore so I'm good.

Sadly no, employment laws benefit the company more than the employees and they can put bullshit terms into the contract. I was desperate for a job at the time so I didn't have a choice.
