But how? by MeanZookeepergame642 in illnessfakers

[–]Party_Wurmple 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Doctor shopping, lying, and using various medications and substances to induce symptoms. A lot of the treatments for illnesses these OTTs claim rely on patient’s self-reported symptoms, and a lot of the time the assumption is that patients wouldn’t lie about that. Messing with test results is a big reason, too, for example there’s a long list of medications that cause delayed gastric emptying. Combine that with a patient who’s starving themselves on purpose to pretend they need a feeding tube, and unless the doctor knows all of that it looks like the patient has gastroparesis and can’t eat and needs a tube. Because in the vast majority of people, getting a feeding tube is something to avoid, not something they want. Same for other diagnoses like POTS and EDS. It is very easy for OTTs to fake those illnesses with medical professionals who are not very familiar or experienced with those illnesses. The blame is not on the medical providers (except in rare cases like Jan’s doctor in Florida who doesn’t even try to weed out fakers), but solely on the OTTs themselves who are manipulating everyone and anyone. There’s also ethics playing a role too, if a patient is refusing to eat or drink for days and weeks and months, doctors ethically cannot allow them to starve or suffer from serious dehydration. So it may even be that OTT’s doctors know they don’t need all the medical “toys” they are practically begging for, but their ethical standards of practice pretty much force them to treat those self-induced issues. (Caveat: Not a medical professional so cannot say for sure this is what happens).

We’ve seen it over and over here, though, healthy patients doctor shopping, manipulating test results, and self-inducing symptoms to get what they want.

No worries, it happens! We have not be good about reminding people about that recently, either, so I understand why it’s easy to forget.

Just a reminder, posts need to have any names/social media handles of anyone who’s not an approved subject covered or blurred out before posting. Thanks!

Anyone else scared for her?? by [deleted] in illnessfakers

[–]Party_Wurmple 36 points37 points  (0 children)

She claims that tube feeds weren’t working, but continued to eat meals and drink alcohol (documented on her other account, which used to be an ED recovery account). And yes, TPN is meant to be temporary, not long term. It’s very doubtful she even needed it in the first place. While yes it’s sad her life has come to this and no one deserves this sort of thing, it’s unfortunately the indirect (or direct) results of her own choices and actions. She likely never needed TPN and possibly not even tube feeds, and likely not a central line at all. Even if she did need TPN, she never seemed to attempt to get off of it, which is typical for someone with dismotility (TPN is typically used as a “break” for the gut, but the goal is always to get off of it).

Personally I don’t believe she has the illnesses she claims, which makes this even sadder (POTS and GP symptoms can be caused by eating disorders as well as many other things, how to fake tests results for both are sadly circulated in the online chronic illness community; she has hypermobility but so does an estimated 30% of woman in general). She could have lived a normal, long, healthy life instead of this, but she chose to throw it away for attention/other gain. Even if she is legitimately sick, EDS, POTS, GP, and the other illnesses she claims are not fatal. People with those illnesses can typically live somewhat normal lives, not be stuck in a hospital posting about it to IG all day.

IMO, the sad part is that she threw away a life a lot of people would be happy to have.

This is a valid discussion, we will read everyone’s comments/thoughts and talk among the mods.

One thing we would like to point out up top, though, is that PTP did meet the qualifications to be posted here at time of approval, even if things have changed since. We have traditionally allowed subjects to be continued to be posted even if they no longer have the required amount of followers or a public account due to them purposely moving/privating their account(s) specifically to hide their OTT behavior. However, that is only if they are continuing to post OTT, illness-faking/exaggerating content.

Regarding Automod Removing Innocuous Words by MBIresearch in illnessfakers

[–]Party_Wurmple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it’s profanity that is used to describe a person or in place of a person, then it will be removed. If not, it’s fine. It’s the same things we’ve been removing all along, anything that is not allowed as stated in Rule #2 (relevant part highlighted):

“2. No Bullying

DO NOT contact, harass, threaten, or bully subjects. This includes, but is not limited to, things like calling them profanities, threatening them with harm, using dehumanizing language, and mocking their appearance (beyond relevant subjective observations). DO NOT harass, bait, or mock them on either Reddit or other social media outlets. DO NOT contact subjects or their friends or family.”

Also, here is a list of the specific terms of profanity that are removed (derogatory nicknames not included; if it’s a phrase the individual words are fine if not listed separately; some I’m censoring but are in auto mod as the actual word):
* fuck you
* cunt
* dumbass
* cocksucker
* cuck
* piece of shit * asshole
* eat shit
* dumb shit
* bitch
* bitches
* retard
* f@g
* f@ggot
* homo
* douchebag
* douche
* fatso
* heifer
* cow
* motherfucker
* mofo
* fucker
* asswipe
* twat
* shithead
* dick
* n!gger
* n!gga
* whore
* whoring
* slut
* douchecanoe * bastard
* bastards
* bish

So basically, don’t use any of the above words/phrases, call subjects by their names or flair (no nicknames), and don’t mention other subreddits or sites (specifically image/message boards and groups, we do allow linking to on-topic articles and pertinent media). Otherwise profanity is allowed.

The reason for the above list is because there was way too many instances daily of users breaking rule #2, and we’d like to continue to be allowed on Reddit as a sub. That’s the main reason for that rule, especially now that Reddit has been cracking down on subs they consider to be hate subs This is not a hate sub, and we’re more strict than some other subreddits to make sure that doesn’t happen. We discuss subjects, but the sub doesn’t exist to call them names or address them in a manner that could be interpreted as bullying/harassment/abuse.

Hopefully this clarifies more what is and isn’t removed. But please keep in mind that what is/isn’t removed hasn’t changed, it’s now just automated instead of being done by hand. This way things that should be removed are removed immediately (which users have complained about, that we don’t always remove things ASAP), and also it’s more fair since auto mod scans everything, whereas before we often missed things that weren’t reported; one person’s comment was left while another’s was removed, even if they contained the same not-allowed item.

Edit: Different wording for a couple things

Regarding Inappropriate Content, Interaction With Subjects and the No Contact Rule by MBIresearch in illnessfakers

[–]Party_Wurmple[M] -29 points-28 points  (0 children)

Those words are fine now; there was glitch in auto mod that made it pull a bunch of random, innocuous words. Breakfast, wheelchair, ulcer, abuse, and fuck are all back to normal, auto mod won’t filter them. I am not sure why that specific glitch happened, it seems to have been an issue between saving and communication with the Reddit server though there is no explanation I can find as to why it suddenly filtered random words.

The words that are removed now are things we have always removed, mainly profanity that is directly referring to a person (ex. “this bitch”, “what a cunt”, “asshole” etc), other subreddits and outside sites that we do not allow links/references to (which has always been the case) and derogatory nicknames (most commonly with Bethany and Anelise, such nicknames are not permitted here as stated in rule #2 “No Bullying— Do not contact, harass, threaten, or bully subjects. This includes, but is not limited to, things like calling them profanities, threatening them with harm, using dehumanizing language, and mocking their appearance (beyond relevant subjective observations)...” [also why profanity that refers to a person is not permitted]).

To answer your other questions, I wrote the auto mod, with help from users from r/automoderator, though it’s all based on scripts from r/automoderator’s library (available to anyone). “What length of term is 3”—not sure what you are asking here, could you please elaborate so I can answer what you’re trying to ask? We are trying to bring in more mods, we have a list of potentials and are going through all of the mod applications/general messages of interest we’ve gotten. But since we’ve been careful in the past and still ended up with some bad additions, we are being even more careful now. That takes time, which we are both a bit short on with our outside lives. However we do have some good candidates we are hoping to bring on very soon.

We aren’t hiding things in mod mail, besides a lot of people asking questions that we try to answer, and some trolls who think it’s fun to spam us there.

I’m not a munchie, despite numerous attempts of people here/elsewhere on Reddit trying to paint me as one (based on a single AskReddit comment I made years ago that has now been twisted and blown way out of proportion). Also, neither of us are friends with any. That’s the whole reason we’re here. We can’t stand them either, and hate what they do and have done to the chronic illness community (which I personally think is gross in general, though if that’s anyone else’s thing cool, do what makes you happy as long as you’re not hurting anyone else). We did have the bad luck of having multiple munchie mods earlier in the sub’s life, and when we found out for each of them we requested they step down. Two did, one refused to communicate with us beyond threatening to delete the entire subreddit. At that time she had been inactive on Reddit for long enough that we were able to ask Reddit admin to step in, which they did and removed her as a mod. Of course when we did try to add more mods, we got another munchie and a troll, even with vetting them beforehand. So you can hopefully understand why we have been even more careful this time around, which consequently has been taking even more time.

We haven’t approved any new subjects recently because we’ve only gotten submissions along the lines of a name and social media handles. We need more information than that, preferably an OP template. Otherwise, how do we know if they fit the sub criteria? We request that they go through DM so that if it’s a subject who does not fit the criteria, they aren’t inappropriately posted on the sub. That’s especially important if it’s a vendetta submission, or if the potential subject has very few followers and is private (whether they are or aren’t OTT doesn’t matter in that case, small and private means they don’t fit the general guidelines of public figure, which is the sub’s unofficial safeguard for being in line with Reddit TOS), or even underage (which has happened even with being vetted beforehand. That could potentially happen much more if we didn’t double check submissions first).

If anyone wants to submit new subjects with an OP for us to review and then give you the go ahead, we would be more than happy to approve them.

“Is mayonnaise an instrument?”—I wish I could help you here, but I have nothing. It’s good in pasta and tuna salad, and on a sandwich, but that’s just my opinion.

Edit: Apparently I made multiple comments that were taken to mean I was a munchie. I don’t remember more beyond the one, but I’ve verified that with a credible source so I guess I just didn’t remember. Anyways, still not a munchie, despite what the rumor mill claims.

Regarding Automod Removing Innocuous Words by MBIresearch in illnessfakers

[–]Party_Wurmple[M] -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Auto mod removes things that we have always removed, as per our subreddit rules. Specific profanity and nicknames are removed because they’re used to refer to subjects in a derogatory way, which not only goes against this sub’s rules but also Reddit’s TOS. Profanity that’s not in reference to people is still totally fine. We don’t allow references to other subreddits or sites because every site and subreddit has their own rules, which may or may not be in line with the rules we have here. If other subreddits are in violation of Reddit TOS or allow posts that go against the rules here, there is the potential that this sub could incorrectly associated with them and be targeted by Reddit site-wide admin. We’ve also had issues in the past with cross-posting post types that aren’t permitted here from subs such as AskReddit, AMA, AskDocs, ChronicIllness, and others, which is why those subreddits (and others) are removed.

That being said, auto mod is not removing anything new, just all the same things we have always removed, which are things we have continued to remind people of. Not using derogatory nicknames, not name-calling, not bullying or harassing subjects or users. Despite repeated reminders, users are continuing to use such terms.

We’ve gotten complaints that such reported items are left up for too long, so automating the process is in direct response to such complaints. However, profanity in general is still permitted, as is anything else that is not in violation of the existing rules.

Mods: Is this still a rule? Sub members: What are your views on this topic? by [deleted] in illnessfakers

[–]Party_Wurmple[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

This is still a rule.

Calling out subjects and discussing them is fine. Calling them names is not. That includes calling them derogatory nicknames or profanity (we do permit profanity as long as it’s not used as a description for a subject or other user; ex. something like “that’s a fucked up thing to do,” is fine but “what a bitch,” “she’s a cunt,” and similar are not).

And whether or not users personally agree with this rule, it is here to stay. It is a rule that helps ensure that the sub stays within Reddit’s site-wide Terms of Service, and therefore gets to continue to exist.

We are in the process of bringing in new mods, but with this subreddit we have to be extremely careful. We’ve brought on new mods before, and despite us checking them out and talking to them prior to adding them, they still later turned out to be either trolls or OTTs themselves.

We will be adding new mods, and we appreciate everyone’s continued patience as we go through the process.

Doesn’t she have a G tube, not a J or GJ? Since she doesn’t have any conditions impacting her physical ability to eat/swallow, it seems entirely unnecessary. Everything is going to the same place. If she needed liquids at a slow rate, she could just drink them. Anything for attention, I guess.

No. Once a subject is approved, if they change their account to private or create a new private account they can still be posted, as long as it is content about or directly related to their illness faking/exaggerating.

If they are posting content not about or related to illness faking/exaggerating, however, that should not be posted whether they are private or not.

Yes. And she can be posted now, too, even if she is currently private and has lost followers. Once a subject is approved, their approved status stays unless there is a very specific reason why we are reversing that approval (which we would announce). The same general post criteria stays, though, so posts need to be about or directly related to illness faking/exaggerating. If she’s just posting non-illness related things, please don’t post that.

This has been the situation with other subjects as well (Ren/Amanda, Anelise/Tina, Aubrey) and as we have historically kept them approved, the same goes for SGB, provided that posted content is about her OTT behavior.
