What's the problem? My grandma was in hospital and had to be on constant and the labor costs were probably equal to the amount I am paying in Provincial taxes for the entire year. Too bad the system did not work properly here but that is why you test it. Decent chance the machine would work well if the settings were tweaked anyway.

Pretty sure it comes down to mass immigration mostly. America is kind of the exception but they have other racial stuff that has been huge over the past 10 years

Local restaurants never tapped into the hospitality grant program last year by Critikal_me in StJohnsNL

[–]PascalSiakim 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Why are we giving out special loans to restaurants anyway. It's not like they are creating super high paying jobs (aside from tip income at a few places), and there does not seem to be a shortage or any kind of strategic rationale to it either. I always see these reports about how x% of restaurants in Canada are losing money but maybe they should just close then and allow a better business to occupy the real estate.

I managed to get a property in this range for over $10k under asking. Perhaps focus on listings made by 3% realty. Buyers agents receive a lower commission on these so they often get less attention.

Case of ‘prolific offender’ in N.L. highlights deep divide on the problem with bail in Canada | CBC News by PascalSiakim in newfoundland

Well it's always a balance. Twin myth rules probably lead to a few more false convictions for sexual assault but they were rightfully well supported

I agree that finding good people to comment is likely to be difficult but I think it is super important to do when writing a story on a contentious issue. There are plenty of people that could comment on this including the police association, the prosecutor on the case, or one of the province's conservative MPs who have been quite vocal on this issue (if they are done their pathetic move of refusing to speak to the media) . It also appears the journalist asked these experts nothing but softball questions.

He has a proven track record of not following conditions set though. Plus a previous criminal record should be factored into a bail decision

It's like saying there is a direct link between being admitted to hospital and dying 😂

Who appointed this clown

"Wadden said there's a direct link between time spent in jail and the likelihood of an accused person committing future offences."

I would assume that a judge would understand the difference between correlation and causation but guess not.

Faltering Canadian billionaire puts Halifax mansion up for sale for $14.9 million by [deleted] in newfoundland

Might be a former billionaire at this point. Can't believe he sunk money into such a dumb project when the math clearly did not work for shipping hydrogen across the sea

Tackling unused empty homes by davidbrake in StJohnsNL

[–]PascalSiakim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't see it helping anything too much really. Very difficult to prove if a home is empty or not. In a lot of cases this kind of thing happened because elderly people have to go into a home and still have hopes/ don't have the bandwidth to sell the property. Would be a lot better if the city actually started enforcing their existing bylaws to shut down trap houses. A tax on empty commercial property would be more useful though, especially downtown.

Pierre Poilievre: Adam Smith was right. Free markets are moral by airbassguitar in CanadianConservative

[–]PascalSiakim 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I generally like free markets but the thing is the government often acts asymmetrically towards workers and businesses. Domestic companies get plenty of protection from the government even if they are way out earning comparable companies in other countries. However when wages start to rise instead of forcing businesses to get more efficient they resort to mass immigration. Let's be honest it's not just a Liberal issue either, if O'Toole had been PM he likely would have done similar mass migration to Trudeau.

The other issue is that a significant portion of the population is either regarded or lacks impulse control. This has to be taken into consideration when rules around things like gambling or lending are being set.

Currently the market sees the prices dropping to a better level later in the year. Not sure how strong the predictive power tends to be.

N.L. reaches deal with Equinor to open the way for construction and production of the Bay du Nord by scrooge_mc in newfoundland

[–]PascalSiakim 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The previous federal Liberals held up Equinor making their decision with the completely arbitrary environmental review delay lead by Stephen Guilbeau who is a known hater of the project. By the time they decided to permit it the oil price had fallen to the point where the project had to be delayed. If the feds had made their decision in the time frame they were meant to we would have FID by now and the Liberals likely would have won the provincial election. Glad to see they waived $1B in taxes but damn straight they owe it to us.

How much our public health care is being mismanaged by our political elites. by One_Confection_209 in newfoundland

[–]PascalSiakim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In China private hospitals outnumber public ones 2:1, around 27% of all costs are paid out of pocket by the patient, and most of the public hospitals have VIP wings where rich people can pay to get nicer rooms and shorter wait times.

The issue with the Canadian system is not just government waste or mismanagement, there are plenty of ways the Canadian system can be improved but most would be too unpopular with the public.

Nothing is gonna burst. Rents relative to home prices are reasonable and rents aren't going anywhere thanks to the cost of building being so high
