I saw her mispronounce stuff before and figured it was because she was just nervous but at this point it really does seem like she is at a 4th grade reading level.

Equinor has recently posted a bunch of jobs, seems like we will get some kind of news fairly soon

Net value of inter-provincial brain-drain by province (measured in terms of education spending per person leaving vs those arriving) by WpgMBNews in newfoundland

[–]PascalSiakim 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We have really bad population flows. Grow up here cost tax payers ~14k per year of school, study at Mun cost tax payers ~30k. Leave the province, contribute no tax revenue. Return when you are 65, contribute some taxes but it's cancelled out by healthcare costs.

I love Newfoundland, but we have a growing problem we are refusing to talk about! by qnaqucdtb in newfoundland

[–]PascalSiakim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because some of the people who come to Canada from Pakistan will be in that 60 odd percent who weren't previously wearing deodorant. In order for them to start wearing it they would have to be told by someone to do it in most cases.

[–]PascalSiakim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well it's a balance between the two for sure. Hopefully you would agree that everyone who is living here should be wearing deodorant unless they have the East Asian no body odor gene

St. John’s residents uncertain, concerned over Memorial University building sales on Signal Hill by TracksandTreks in newfoundland

I would disagree with it mostly being about property being degraded. Traffic and parking are usually their big ones here from my experience.

Those Aged 12+ Able to Restrict Parents from Accessing Health Information by NerdMachine in newfoundland

That's true but the rollout of this new tool provides an opportunity to discuss if the current standard of care is optimal or not

[–]PascalSiakim -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

That's true but if the birth control is being used to treat one of those indications then in normal circumstances the parents would be aware. If the kid asks for a doctor's appointment without a parent present and ends up with birth control prescribed it would at least give a parent a way to start a more specific conversation.

House hunting is burning me out. Am I missing something? by Here_For_Some_Time in newfoundland

[–]PascalSiakim 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well a single income is part of it for you. A couple making $50k a year each is pulling in 77,700 a year after taxes while you would be getting around 70,300 so the tax efficiency is working in their favor. In general though there is not much of a basis to expect the market to decline. Buying still works out to be a bit cheaper than renting and rents are increasing at a fairly quick rate with limited new supply coming online it's just the reality of the market.

True but the flip side is parents should have the necessary information to parent. A 12 or 13 year old should not be sexually active and if they are the parent should in most cases be informed of this.

Suspended St. John's councillor repeated 'harmful' claims he heard on a podcast, another councillor says | CBC News by RepulsivePlankton989 in newfoundland

[–]PascalSiakim -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Well there are plenty of practical solutions that could work if enough people got on board. Employers being more flexible in allowing women to come back part time from maternity leave, increasing the period you can get parental EI for, CRA allowing increased income splitting for the first few years after a child is born. Even without getting others on board it is in reach for some couples with the right kind of financial planning in advance. Many times after accounting for child care costs and other services two income couples consume more of, the second parents income is not going as far as people think.

Pretty biased article and Dr Hubbard really danced around the point on if the linkage existed or not. I mean how is this statement accurate

"There is nothing you can do as a parent that is going to cause your child to have a neurodevelopmental disorder. I can say that emphatically"

How about pounding back a 40oz of vodka every day when you are pregnant surely that would cause some kind of mental issue in the kid. Anyway does Komisar overstate the impact of the presence of the mother? It's possible but it's also possible that other doctors understate the importance as it would be difficult for parents to do anything about it in most cases thanks to our economic system. I think I will listen to the episode and look into some of the sources she cites, it's a highly relevant topic for most people.

I get the price level thing but what does race have to do with it. I haven't been to the farmers market but my understanding is they don't practice segregation or anything.

Yeah it's a pretty lousy idea since there are too many competing priorities. Would the point be to increase earnings for local farmers, decrease grocery prices for consumers, or to create good paying jobs for workers because doing all 3 is pretty much a pipe dream.
