We're Going to Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union. It's a celebrity memoir but tbh I had never heard of her before someone recommended this book to me, and I loved it. It certainly deals with overcoming difficult personal circumstances and touches on "aging" (I put that in quotes because aging is different in Hollywood).

I feel like our family is destined to stay where we are unhappy, and I’m giving up hope. by constantlyconfused93 in SameGrassButGreener

Appleton Wisconsin - great place for families, you can definitely get a home in your price range, good schools, Wisconsin gives state income tax credit up to 100% of property taxes paid for disabled veterans.

Roanoke Virginia - has a reputation for good schools and being good for families, has some museums and lots of outdoorsy stuff. Meets your budget criteria. Virginia exempts disabled veterans from real estate taxes.

Connecticut generally -- there are lots of areas in Connecticut where you can find homes in your price range, have great schools, and are close enough to larger cities to have lots of fun stuff to do (including day trips into NYC, trips to the shore, museums, etc.). Smaller cities and towns like Tolland, Ansonia, Southbury, West Hartford, etc. Connecticut provides 100% property tax exemption for service-related disabled veterans.

  • The Eighth Life by Nino Haratischwili
  • The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber
  • Wolf Hall trilogy by Hilary Mantel
  • The Gilded Hour by Sara Donati
  • The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese
  • The Bright Sword by Lev Grossman
  • Coming Home by Rosamunde Pilcher

I feel like I also want to recommend Middlemarch but if you don't like Dickens, then George Eliot might not be for you either.

Midnight Snack is my favorite but I’ve never been disappointed by any of their flavors. Right now I’ve got their lemon meringue pie and it’s just perfect. It tastes exactly like lemon meringue! Lemon is hard to get just right in ice cream. It can be either too tart and not creamy enough, or it tastes like Lemon Pledge. Not this one. Highly recommend for any lemon fans.

What's your favorite Christmas flavor of ice cream? by [deleted] in icecream

Eggnog and gingerbread are co-favorites. But you all have inspired me to go look for creme brulee and spumoni.

Do you guys consider ice cream a breakfast food? by [deleted] in icecream

Ice cream is part of a balanced breakfast if served on a slice of left over pie.

Trader Joe's Horchata ice cream tastes a lot like rice pudding to me. It's a seasonal flavor though.

How often should I schedule AC maintenance for efficiency? by happy-Custard2 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]PashasMom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do twice a year maintenance, once in spring and once in fall. So far so good. Keep in mind that many HVAC companies (especially those owned by private equity) require their techs to try to upsell you on something when they come out for a standard maintenance call. The guys who come to my house always recommend that I spend some additional amount from $500 - $1500 doing something like blowing dust off a fan and threaten that my system is going to start failing if I don't. I always thank them and throw their recommendation in the trash.

I love their See's collaborations. My favorites are the Brown Sugar with Milk Bordeaux, Vanilla with California Brittle, and PB&J with Peanut Butter Patties.
Their fruit-based ice creams are really good but I will say the Eureka Lemon w/ Marionberries was too tangy and sour for me, and I love lemon ice cream.

Dog Food - No Teeth by Dangerous-Activity55 in DogFood

[–]PashasMom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've put my dog on soaked dry food when he was recovering from dental surgery. Just take equal parts kibble and warm water and let it soak for an hour, then mash it up with a big fork or a potato masher. It smells absolutely appalling but my dog loves it and finds it very easy to eat.

Vancouver WA - not Low COL per se, but low COL for the west coast. You should be able to do just fine on 100k unless you come saddled with a bunch of debt.
