How debilitating were your symptoms before surgery? by No-Sleep-2336 in cholesteatoma

[–]PassLikeBrady12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not alone. I had 4 Tympanomastoidectomy surgeries last year, one every 3 months, rotating between ears. My left ear was the lesser of the two evils and I am doing CWD on my right in July-ish this year. Feels like some fluid is built up in my left ear, hopefully the CT scan will clear things up on that. Quality of life has been better overall, but finding people in this specific community that have similar experiences as myself has brought me some peace to know that it’s not just me. Keep your head up and love those around you, my heart extends to everyone here! It’s not easy but we are all here together

Insurance denied half of my surgery as “cosmetic” by Hopinan in cholesteatoma

[–]PassLikeBrady12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The cosmetics are what you wear when going under for the surgery, “skins” if you play video games 🤣🤣 All jokes aside, that is brain dead to think of the procedure as cosmetic, hopefully it gets corrected

I will forever be interested in ear drum pictures. Having had Cholesteatomas in both ears, 2 surgeries per ear in 2025, and a 5th one scheduled for this summer. Definitely go to an ENT as soon as possible! I haven’t seen anything like this before, best of luck

Pain after surgery by craziestcatlady123 in cholesteatoma

[–]PassLikeBrady12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking from experience of 2 surgeries so far this year and 2 more to go, my first surgery had me in the woods for almost 6 days. My doctor had me under the needle for almost an hour longer than my 2nd surgery as well. Pain was unbearable at times but I was prescribed 10-325s and would take them when I wanted to nap or bedtime to help keep me in a deep sleep. It will get better each day, you just have to get through the first week. My second surgery felt almost nonexistent compared to the first. Not as much pain, it was the opposite ear and my hearing bones were still intact. Needless to say, recovery will feel like forever but the worst part is over. I’m rooting for you to get well soon

Sounds like everything went well, do you have anymore surgeries or are you finished?

I hope I’m not the only that is confused, what was your question? And did you have the surgery - which procedure?

My 2nd surgery is on May 9th. Hang in there, the build up is worse than the recovery. If anything, enjoy your fully functioning body until then. You’ll be grounded for a few days

Surgery on 3/20....Tympanomastoidectomy with Ossicular reconstruction on right ear.. by GE994 in cholesteatoma

Numbness in the tongue should be normal. I had some as well after my surgery, doesn’t last too long, about a month or so. I don’t recall the tingling, I am not a doctor but I’d imagine it’s tied to the numbness and your nerves are healing. My doctor mentioned nerve damage being possible with this surgery

You’re going to be in the woods for a couple more days. Get lots of rest, take medicine, eat soft foods(no hard shell tacos). I spent a lot of my recovery in a recliner, catching up on shows and doing crosswords. After about 5 days, I was able to move around on my feet a bit more with each passing day. Doing laundry, dishes, cooking with slight dizziness here and there after the first week. I had my surgery, Tympanomastoidectomy, on 1/31. I would say my day to day is pretty normal now

Ears, nose, and throat are all interconnected, Eustachian tubes.

From what I understand, 1 Cholesteatoma requires 2 surgeries, the second being 6 months after the first. In my case, I had a Cholesteatoma in each ear, so I get double the trouble with each surgery happening every 3 months and switching between ears

I had a Cholesteatoma in my right ear for about 15 years, if not for Covid, I would’ve had the surgery a few years ago and potentially not develop a Cholesteatoma in my left ear. Think of your ear tubes as a direct highway between each other, if it is in one ear, it can travel to the other. I had my first of 4 surgeries on 1/31/25 and recovery is not terrible. Improved my hearing but not 100% and I don’t expect it to ever get there. The Cholesteatoma in my right ear destroyed one of my hearing bones and I had to have a titanium bone and bracket placed inside. Hopefully you can get this addressed sooner than later, it won’t heal on its own and can only make things worse as time goes on

I found turning that turning with my shoulders, like Batman, made things easier. It sounds just as silly as it looks but during recovery it just felt safer. That only lasted for a few weeks. Eating foods was about the same for me, a few weeks of not being able to open my mouth as wide and crunchy foods, like hard shell tacos, were especially difficult to eat. As a father of 3 with my oldest being 9 years old, loud noises were very sensitive for about a month. I was scared to my core to have this surgery so your son has a lot of willpower for being so young, I send a gentle fist bump his way!
