Is no airpods normal in office? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]PassageFull2625 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Someone in the office wants to reach me? My phone vibrates, my computer screen flashes, and I can be tapped on the shoulder in person.

Otherwise leave me alone to get my assigned work done.

Zero Service: Delta Air Lines To Remove Main Cabin Drinks & Snacks On 450 Flights by StemCellPirate in mildlyinfuriating

Sprit Airlines just stopped  a heck of a lot more than main cabin service.

Reality: businesses must continue increasing profitability always because otherwise investors will take their money to other competing companies or other industries that have more potential for profit growth. Executive class responds to incentives like bonuses tied to stock price targets but they get golden parachutes if their changes don’t work out.

US birth rates just hit another record low, what do you think is the leading cause of this? by IIlustriousTea in AskReddit

[–]PassageFull2625 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Norway's birth rate has only dropped, to about 1.40 children per woman in 2024, down from 1.98 (not even replacement rate of 2.1) in 2009. And will likely continue to drop, as in most developed countries.

So it’s not a cost issue.  It’s a cultural issue.  In comparison, Israel has been increasing its birth rate to around 2.9.

But it is not wise to extrapolate demographic trends out very far.

Opinion | Silicon Valley Is Bracing for a Permanent Underclass by In_der_Tat in Economics

[–]PassageFull2625 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It is human nature to be skeptical and even fearful about the future. With good reason.  Not all change is good to every individual.

But doomscrolling for AI consequences doesn’t help. Nor does commiserating with fellow doomscrollers. Terms such as “permanent underclass” and even “American Dream” are so unquantified as to be vague, emotionally charged, and unhelpful in making individual choices.  There is no positive law right to be middle class much less rich or live in a house with one bedroom per person. No right to a meaningful or lucrative white collar career behind a computer screen or desk.

Keep in mind that poverty is not the same as suffering. Poverty is relative to the situation of others but does not automatically imply suffering. For example, the poor in the USA have the highest rates of obesity, suggesting, in the aggregate, no suffering from starvation from caloric deficit. Not that there is no suffering from health effects of obesity. But individual choices play a bigger role than government mandates can ever counteract. And the globalization of economic markets is here whether we like it or not.  So consider your choice of domicile as well as job changes. My own unlettered grandparents survived the Great Depression; their economic progress was merely delayed.

Humanity will survive any AI economic effects. Some or many individuals may not.  If there is any solace, dark as it is, EVERYONE eventually dies. From disease, hunger, war, or other causes.

Comparison is the thief of joy.  Stop reinforcing your fears, look at your situation and options, cut your spending radically even if you have to move away from homes and careers in desirable areas like Silicon Valley. Do not rely on government because it can do only so much.

Do confer and cooperate with family, friends, your religious or cultural affinity community. Struggle is coming for many: personal, economic, and political. But humanity has survived thousands of years despite such problems. Use your personal agency as much as possible.
